Exfoliation is far more than just scrubbing your face – there’s a real art to it.
Exfoliate too much and you can actually dry out the skin then leading to an over-compensation of oils – making you break out more (read Double Cleansing). Exfoliating too little could result in dull skin as you’re not effectively removing dead skin cells.
What’s the deal with exfoliation? We answer your questions.
Q: How often should I exfoliate my face?
A: Gently using a face cloth and applying light pressure when washing the face in circular motions is exfoliation that can be used daily. Scrub products can be used 3-4 times a week and make sure that it’s a gentle exfoliant – look for products with polyethylene beads as exfoliants over seeds and nuts as these are generally harsher on the skin.
If you’re into hand-held exfoliation devices or sloughing sponges, 1-2 times week is recommended so as to avoid over exfoliation. Like everything, see what works best for you.
If you’re experiencing dryness, irritation, sensitivity and redness you may be over-exfoliating and should adjust accordingly. Some of our favourite facial exfoliants are:
1. Neutrogena’s Visibly Clear Pink Grapefruit Daily Scrub (R76.99)
2. Garnier’s Freash Radiance Boosting Scrub (R59.99)
3. Nivea’s Daily Essentials Skin Refining Scrub (R49.99)
Q: Can exfoliating remove wrinkles?
A: Completely remove? No. But the good news is that they will help to diminish the signs of aging and fine lines as well as help with discolouration – particularly if you’re exfoliating with products containing lactic acid as this helps to even out skin tone.
Q: What is dry exfoliation? A: Dry exfoliation, or dry brushing, involves brushing the skin to remove dead skin cells before washing. Dry brushing is particularly good on the body as the skin is less sensitive than on the face – it helps to eliminate dry skin (leaving it feeling soft and smooth) while improving circulation and reducing the appearance of cellulite!
And very importantly – always moisturise well after exfoliating!
