What would be better than having glowing, radiant skin 24/7? Well, other than having an overflowing bank account, nothing. The thing is is that we’re all very different so what works for your best friend might not work for you. We’ve put together our top seven tips that everyone can follow.
Tip One: Well-Balanced Diet
Cutting out all processed food, pasta, bread and sugar, and adding lots of lean protein, fresh fruits and veggies to your diet will create miracles. Protein is the building block of cells and by upping your protein, your skin cells are able to keep reproducing and stay hydrated. Fresh greens such as arugula, kale and collards oxygenate the skin like NO other skin cream. We know it sounds obvious but this is just another added reason to kick your cravings to the curb and march into the land of radiant skin.
Tip Two: SLEEP
We’re not sure about you but we LOVE it when we’re told we need to sleep more. Sleep plays a massive role in your anti-ageing schedule and should be a priority in your life in general. Your skin has to deal with a lot during the day so by getting a good night’s sleep, you’re basically pressing the recharge button. Your skin will love you for it and you’ll definitely notice a difference.
Tip Three: Leave Your Face Alone
As tempting as it is to pick at your face for hours, please don’t. It leads to scarring, redness, infection and basically nothing good ever comes from it. Instead, get yourself a spot cream with salicylic acid to attack spots. If you’re really concerned about a spot, get yourself an appointment with your trusted dermatologist.
BONUS: FYI, don’t ever pick up a magnifying mirror. Like, ever. The temptation to pick will be ever so real.
Tip Four: Keep It Clean
People often don’t realise how vital cleaning your face is. For a moment, compare your face to a greasy pan. Our skin is covered in glands that secrete and produce oils to keep the skin hydrated, soft and supple. You wouldn’t just rinse your dirty, oily pan and leave it like that would you? No, you’d hopefully wash it properly, just like you should do with your skin.
BONUS: Use a hydrating mist once you’ve washed your face to neutralise any of the chemicals that may be in the tap water. Try Clinique Moisture Surge Face Spray Thirsty Skin Relief (R320)
Tip Five: Ice, Ice Baby
The best tip we’ve ever received from a dermatologist is to make ice your best friend. ‘Icing’ (placing ice on your breakout) is the most genius and cheapest way to stop any inflammation and worsening of spots. The ice acts as an anti-inflammatory (similar to why you ice an injury) and will reduce swelling. Ice also acts as a natural exfoliant.
BONUS: Try adding some aloe vera to the water before you freeze your ice cubes.
Tip Six: Use a Good Face Oil
The best way to fake a glowing complexion is to use a good face oil. We know you’re probably thinking ‘I want to make my skin radiant NOT oily’, but by using an effective face oil the opposite to what you think will happen, happens. The oil won’t clog the pores and will actually prevent your face from producing excess oil, creating a balance in oil production. We love Lipidol Overnight Face Oil (R79,95)
Tip Seven: Use Protection
Before you leave the house, make sure you’ve put on an SPF30 or higher. Make sure you cover up with a cute hat and sunnies – use this as an excuse to get yourself those Dolce & Gabbana sunglasses you’ve been pining over. Being able to look trendy AND know you’re looking after your skin is a win-win situation for everybody.
