Acne break-outs are often impossible to avoid – even women with the most flawless-looking skin are bound to end up with an unwanted pimple from time to time. Below are three habits, part of our weekly routine, that most of us are completely unaware may be hindering us from ever having blemish-free skin.
1. Your Facial Cleanser
The number-one rule when buying facial cleansers? Ditch any products that leave your skin feeling dry or uncomfortably tight. This is usually an indicator that the formula contains harsh detergents like SLS (sodium lauryl sulfate), an ingredient responsible for making some of our face washes soapy. It’s also found in shampoos, car washes and garage floor cleaners – and we’re putting this onto our faces.
What detergents like SLS do is strip our skin’s natural oil, leaving it in an incredibly dry condition. Our skin is then triggered to produce even more oil in an attempt to reduce its dryness. This over-secretion of oil can lead to break-outs.
Other ingredients to avoid are synthetic fragrances – these are unnatural, artificial scents that dry out your skin, and ‘almost always cause irritation and some amount of inflammation’. (Paulaschoice.com)
2. Your Cellphone
We don’t want to gross you out or anything but, just for a second, imagine all the surfaces your cellphone has been on today – a restaurant table, the kitchen counter at work, on the floor cause you probably dropped it once or twice today… And then you pick it up and have a 15-minute-long phone call, transmitting all those accumulated germs to your skin. A tip from Teen Vogue? Answer phone calls with your headphones or switch your calls to speaker when you can.
3. Your Gym
Always pack sanitising wipes when you go for a morning or evening workout. Every piece of equipment at your gym has dirt and bacteria on it, and when you use your hand to wipe the sweat off your forehead, you’re just transmitting hundreds of germs to your skin without even knowing it. A tip? Use wipes to sanitise any handles or accessories you’ll use before you start working out.
