Sometimes, your skinny jeans are just too damn tight. The relief that comes with taking your jeans off and the rush of blood back into your limbs is pure bliss.
But can you imagine actually passing out because your jeans were too tight? Well, a 35-year-old Australian woman passed out on the side of the street in Adelaide because her skinny jeans were too tight. As she walked home, the woman found herself struggling to lift her increasingly numb feet.

The woman was helping a friend move, which consisted of squatting and kneeling for long periods of time. In the end her jeans prevented her legs expanding, forcing the muscles to swell, compress downwards and crush the nerves. There was not enough blood supply to the muscles.
She fell to the ground on her way home when her feet could no longer move. She lay there for several hours before she was found and was taken to the Royal Adelaide Hospital. ‘As she was squatting for a long period of time, her trousers restricted the blood supply to both calves, and in response the muscles start to undergo stress and swell,’ said Dr Thomas Kimber in the Journal of Neurology, Neurosurgery & Psychiatry.
Her legs had swelled so much that the doctors at the Royal Adelaide Hospital had to cut the jeans off. ‘We were certainly surprised and shocked,’ said Dr Kimber. ‘It was a surprise to us that someone could get such severe nerve and muscle damage from the activity she described. The clothing she was wearing was the critical factor.’
After four days in the hospital on intravenous fluids, she regained her ability to walk and went home. Doctors have advised men trying for a baby to avoid tight trousers and jeans as they may cause the testicles to overheat, lowering their sperm count. Tight jeans have also been associated with fungal infections, bladder weakness and urinary-tract infections.
‘If people experience any discomfort or tingling from wearing tight jeans while squatting, they should stand up and move around,’ says Dr Kimber. So the next time you find yourself in a situation where your skinnies don’t suit the task at hand, rather go for boyfriend jeans or better yet, yoga pants.
