These days there seems to be so many myths and contradictory theories about our health, it can be difficult to work out what’s fact and what’s, well, hysteria. We investigate five concerns.

Do Nail-Salon Pedicures Give You Foot Fungus? ‘That’s a myth,’ says dermatologist David Wong. ‘The active ingredient in spray tans is a chemical made from sugars. It binds to the dead skin cells in the top layer of your skin, and doesn’t penetrate any further.’ Regarding inhalation being dangerous, Wong says that spray-tan mist is a potential irritant, but it shouldn’t be a problem unless you have asthma or a similar condition. ‘The beauticians who apply the spray tan wear masks because they’re around the mist a lot,’ he says. ‘If you’re having it applied, keep your mouth closed and try not to breathe too much in.’
