Yesterday morning it was reported that legendary actor, songwriter and film producer Joe Mafela passed away.
According to Metro Police spokesperson Edna Mamonyane, Mafela died after he was involved in a car accident. The accident happened before 10pm on the M1 North in Johannesburg.
Speaking to The Juice, Mamonyane said, ‘On the M1 between Oxford and Houghton Mr Mafela was involved in an accident. He was driving a Ford Figo when he bumped a bakkie on the left-hand side and the bakkie went into a barricade. When the officers arrived on the scene Mr Mafela had passed on. When the paramedics got there, on first inspection, it appeared as though he didn’t die of his injuries from the car accident but perhaps an attack of some sort. The damages on the vehicle are not that serious. The investigation is still ongoing.’
‘He was the happiest when I last saw him on Saturday, telling me that he was going on a cruise with his wife,’ actress Lillian Dube said. ‘I have known Joe forever and Joe was such a lovely human being and generous. I am so saddened. I started working with Joe, I had known him as this imbungulu on Sis’ May (‘Sgudi ‘Snaysi). I first worked with him on Khululeka when we were preparing for the elections and I was playing the part of his sister. I found him to be a very wonderful person – sharing and encouraging.’
Tributes have been pouring in since the news broke, making the #RIPJoeMafela trend on social media:
