The Zodiac of Teamwork pg3

Bet you didn’t know that you have tigers, pigs and roosters in your office? Before you call the SPCA, read on – according to the Chinese horoscope, the year in which we were born corresponds to the characteristics of a particular animal, and has a marked effect on one’s personality (no wonder things get messy from time to time!). But knowing what animal signs you and your colleagues are, and recognising everyone’s strengths and weaknesses, can go a long way towards promoting harmonious working relationships. Whether you’re best described as dependable and ambitious (the ox) or astute and flexible (the rabbit), everyone has something unique and important to contribute.

An important part of working effectively in a team is the ability to regulate your attitude, and make a conscious effort to acknowledge your co-worker’s strengths, even if you don’t agree with everything they do. A good example is the person born under the sign of the horse who, according to astrology, can be seen as arrogant or, on a more positive note, is perceptive, intelligent and open-minded. In a leadership role, self-confidence is imperative, so be grateful that your ‘horse boss’ is, at least, smart and open to other ideas.

The neat, meticulous, and organised rooster can be viewed as an overly critical perfectionist, or great at dealing with the finer details – depending on your point of view. This sign makes for very good organisers, like PAs and bookkeepers, but perhaps aren’t at their strongest when called on to be creative or to think outside the box. Likewise the lazy, pessimistic dog will not be good at sales and marketing, but is honest, straightforward, and loyal, so is well-suited to be trusted with the company’s money, for example.

If you’re having a hard time with somebody in your office, find out where they fit into the Chinese horoscope. It will give you a clue as to why they do things the way they do, and help you to appreciate their strengths and weaknesses. Likewise, if you don’t feel like you’re well-suited to the job you’ve been allocated, check out how you could modify your tasks so that your skills are better utilised.
