On The Job pg2

Shrink-wrap your job promotion so it lasts longer.

So you got the promotion? Congrats! Now it’s time to get your butt into gear, because the work habits that landed you your promotion won’t wow your superiors forever.

‘When your boss raises your rank, you need to amp up your performance so you can meet her or his higher standards,’ explains Lois P. Frankel, author of Nice Girls Don’t Get the Corner Office (Little, Brown and Company). Here’s how to ensure post-promotion success.

Rejig relationships
Before your promotion, you may have had little contact with company decision-makers. Now you’re a step closer to their level, so start relating to them in a more confident way. Asking how a higher- up’s day is going and acting more forward in meetings will show you’re comfortable with your elevated status. Another savvy move: revamp relationships with former peers. ‘Cut back the time you spend with them during office hours,’ Murphy says. ‘This shows that you respect the divide between you and the more junior staffers, while still preserving those friendships.’
