Men who are manipulative, violent and otherwise dangerous are adept at hiding those disturbing characteristics. Renowned psychiatrist Keith Ablow has put together five warning signs that a man might be serious trouble.

1. He Drinks In Excess Or Takes Drugs	People who use drugs or alcohol in excess are self-medicating. They are trying to insulate themselves from underlying feelings they can't deal with - feelings like depression, anxiety, or rage. Substances can take the edge off those uncomfortable emotions, so your guy can seem particularly outgoing and happy when he's had a few. But just as often, alcohol or drugs work the other way and release - the bad emotions. When a man is emotionally abusive, physically violent or sexually inappropriate when drunk or high and tells you 'It wasn't me,' don't believe him. It was him - the real him. The other scary thing about substance abusers is that a man who becomes addicted to one thing is more likely to become addicted to another, including you. Your presence becomes a fix to help him bury his pain and loneliness, his fears of being unlovable. And leaving a substance abuser can not only be frightening but also dangerous.
