Our Beauty Assistant Lived Like Bonang Matheba for a Day. And It Was Exhausting

“I now fully understand why celebs have glam squads.”

If you could live like an international or local celeb for one day who would it be?

My choices? Beyoncé (obviously), or our very own Queen B, Bonang Matheba. But let’s be realistic. Living their lifestyles for a day would be virtually impossible for most – just think of the fancy cars, pricey weaves, makeup that’s literally worth my rent – ain’t nobody got funds for that.

To work around this dilemma, our senior online content manager, Mimi Thurgood, came up with a pretty brilliant plan: ‘why not just replicate some of Bonang’s best Instagram photos?’ Which is exactly what we did last week – and honestly, I underestimated how hard it would be.

My day consisted of:

  • nine outfit changes
  • two wig changes
  • three lipstick changes
  • six location changes
  • and three glasses of white wine – because I was exhausted by the end of this.

Special thanks to our fashion interns Julia Brown and Jess Gaertner for sourcing beautiful looks for the shoot, our photographer for the day Gemma Shepherd, as well as Jeremy Adam Walt from Jabula Hair Salon in Cape Town, who offered us some gorgeous human hair wigs to try.

What I learned from this experience?

  1. I have a little more respect for Bonang’s everyday beauty and fashion routine, because after 5 hours, the constant clothing and makeup changes left me unbelievably tired.
  2. I do not miss weaves at all. I have a pixie cut at the moment, and I nearly shed a tear when I finally got to remove my wig at the end of the shoot. Wearing a thick wig or weave on a hot day is not pleasant.
  3. I now fully understand why celebs have glam squads.
