Ah, salt. This all-purpose mineral has been used to season food since forever, but did you know that it can add some much-needed flavour to your beauty routine as well? You read that right – here are five ways that adding salt to your regimen can make you shine.
Salt is a drying mineral, which means that it has the power to work miracles on people prone to breakouts.
Toner is the second crucial step in the facial-cleansing process, and making your own toner, using a mixture of salt and lukewarm water shaken together, can help to dry up any unwanted blemishes and absorb excess oil.
We always want our lips to look lush, and incorporating a lip scrub into your beauty routine is a good way to keep them smooth. Make an effective exfoliant using two or three tablespoons of salt and one tablespoon of petroleum jelly mixed together, and use as you would a regular body scrub to remove dead and flaky skin.
Who doesn’t love tousled locks? While sea water might be the best way to get beach hair, in winter this isn’t really a viable option. So to add texture, you can use a salt spray which can be made by combining salt and warm water in a spray bottle. Allow to cool, then shake and spray on to your hair while it’s still wet from the shower, and allow to dry naturally. Magic!
Salt is also known for its disinfecting properties. This means that, when added to water and gargled and swished, it can make an amazing mouthwash that can kill the bacteria responsible for cavities, bad breath and gingivitis. Why buy mouthwash from a store when you can make your own, amiright? FYI: never swallow! Too much salt water can be poisonous.
Frequent manis and pedis got your nails looking an unsightly shade of yellow? No problem, salt can fix this beauty dilemma too! Mix together one teaspoon of salt, one teaspoon of baking soda, one teaspoon of lemon juice and half a cup of warm water in a bowl, soak your nails in the solution for 10 minutes and gently scrub to remove stains. Voilà!
