Rochelle says: The splash of colour against the neutrals in this look works wonders for Alexandra as it draws attention to her beautiful face. The clash of the bright top and the paler skirt also draws a strong line over her waist. This combines with the flare in the skirt and in the top accentuates an hourglass figure. It's a great look for girls with a boyish shape. Girls often shy away from colour, but it always is such a show stopper when done right. You also do not have to bathe yourself in colour from head to toe, take cue from Alexandra and use it as an accent.

Jade Leggat http://www.cosmopolitan.co.za//Fashion/StyleCounsel/jade-leggat My name is: Jade Leggat
I am: 25
I work as a: make-up artist
I live in: Cape Town and London
Rochelle says: Jade's outfit is so pretty. It's cleverly put together to create a girly look without the frills. The fact that she has chosen black to accessorize as well as her shoe option gives the outfit a tough edge that counterbalances the girlyness. The key to the look is the simplicity of it and Jade shows us that 'less is more' works well. Hemlines which end on the knee can be tricky to wear and can look old if not styled correctly. Choose something with a nipped in waist and stay far clear of high necklines. You want to show some skin around your neck and a dainty necklace will work well. If you are a statement accessories girl rather opt for large earrings to still keep the neckline open.

I live in: Fourways, Johannesburg
Rochelle says: I love the colour combination of Katlego's outfit. The pale tones lend a sophisticated edge while the one dash of bright pink in the handbag brings a touch of playfulness to the outfit. It's a slick city look, yet it is still feminine because of the romantic top. This outfit is perfect for the office; it's strong, feminine, sophisticated, fun, sexy and fashionable all at the same time. Katlego's oversized earrings draw attention to her neckline and face – a great accessory for those hot summer days when you are wearing wide necklines. A good general rule to follow when wearing oversized earrings is to keep your neckline clean of other detail.

The fashion pallet is all about nudes right now. I love the fact that Tamsin has gone all out with this hot trend and chose nudes from head to toe. The affect is a simple, stylish look. If you are going to dress in one colour it is a good idea to have one or two points of interest (texture is a good example) in your outfit. Here, the sleeve detailing and half moon bag do just that. A handbag can add all the detail and can make or break an outfit, so if you want to be a style icon choose your handbags carefully. A nice formal handbag can quickly glam up a jeans-and-tee outfit. However, the opposite of wearing a casual bag with a formal outfit is a plain disaster.

Hannah’s relaxed, casual yet stylish look is a winner. Although it is fabulously put together, it looks as if it was effortlessly done. She shows us that layering works great when you use monotone colours, and the different textures and shades of grey add interest and depth. When it comes to layering, it should be your clothes or accessories, not both. Like Hannah, wear just one chunky piece when you are adding layers of clothes. The alternative is to go for a simple outfit like a dress with layers of jewellery. A bunch of dainty necklaces worn together becomes a statement, but keep them at different lengths. The socks add some fun and youthfulness to the outfit and its clear why socks are a must have.

Gone or the days of only wearing flesh coloured stockings for warmth and to hide your bare skin in winter. Today stockings are a fashion statement by themselves. There are so many options to choose from and an endless way to style them. What’s more, it’s an inexpensive way to fashion-up your wardrobe and create different looks for every day. Black opaque stockings are probable the most versatile. They can finish off an all-black look, contrast a bright outfit like Taryn’s or show off neutral colours like khaki and brown. Wearing stockings under shorts is a trend seen in street style pictures all over the world and it’s a fantastic option for those who like shorts but don’t want to show off their legs. Printed stockings are also making a comeback but it’s a trickier trend to pull off. For best results, it’s best to keep the rest of the outfit simple and without other patterns.

I like the messy street style look Tanya has created with this outfit. She has combined vintage with high street fashion items and this gives her an individual look. She is clearly aware of the trends and although she has chosen high fashion items, like the crop top, she is not trying to make a fashion statement but rather expressing her personality, something we can all do a little more. Although nothing matches, her odd choice of colour and texture combination works fabulously together as an entire outfit.

This outfit is sure to turn heads. It’s cute sexy and fun. Shorts are in and a short jumpsuit is a sure way to make a fashion statement. Choosing an elegant high heels adds a grown up touch to the look and also elongates her legs. The broad waist belt accentuates her waist adding to an hourglass shape while the colour echoes the black in the shoes pulling the outfit together. The jumpsuit has a very busy print and Roxanne has cleverly added very little jewellery. The pieces that she did decide on are understated and simple.

I love Monique’s outfit. It’s sophisticated and sexy. She shows us that looking sexy does not mean you need to show a lot of skin, you can simply add a pair of lace stockings. The touch of lace, the drape of the skirt and the ruffle details on the shirt work together to add a sensual and feminine touch to the outfit. Monique teamed basic items; a white shirt, black skirt, stockings and court shoes, but all these items have beautiful and subtle detailing turning a rather ordinary work outfit into a style statement.

The jeans and T-shirt is a winning combo that can either be a major style statement, or a no-brainer slobbish look. Leanne, however, get’s the look right. Her choice of mixed browns and khaki’s pull the outfit together, it also gives the grungy rock look a daytime appeal. I love the way Marli put this outfit together. She has taken classic items (the T-shirt, skirt and boots) to create a sleek modern look. But by adding some funky fashionable accessories she has not only added a fun element to this outfit, she has made it more fashion relevant. The patterned stockings and rock-inspired earrings are small touches, but they are enough to update the entire outfit. It’s worth spending a bit more on good quality, classic garments that will last and not outdate. This way you will always have something to wear and like Marli you can stay on trend by adding fashion forward accessories every season.

Skye believes that if you feel comfortable in what you wear you will look great and we can clearly see this motto rings true for her. She has cleverly taken very casual items and combined them with slightly smarter ones, like the handbag to create a relaxed yet trendy street style look. It's a tricky trend to pull off and combining different textures is key. This is easiest and works best when you are teaming up garments in similar colours – Skye has chosen blacks and greys. But most importantly, in Skye's own words, 'wear the clothes, don't let the clothes wear you'.

I love Tarmar's clean classic look, she's got it all down to basics. Having good quality and classic, styled basic items in your wardrobe means you will always have something to wear and you will always look fantastic. Important things to remember when shopping for these basics are a good fit and the right colours. Rather opt for neutral colours; they don't date and all you need to do to update your look is add trendy accessories or one high fashion item. Although the items Fee is wearing are simple and basic pieces she looks super trendy and rather cute at the same time. This is done by clever combinations and attention to small details such as the knot in the jacket, the loosely tucked in check scarf and the pretty satin alice band. Leggings, boots and a jacket or coat is the perfect combo for this winter and Fee's choice of a shorter jacket helps to elongate her legs. The glimpse of red in the scarf livens up the winter look and gives a slightly more casual feel and I just love the playful touch the alice band adds. Hair accessories are a big new trend.

Mixing things up is not only fun, it's also a great way to communicate individuality. Don't be afraid to combine different textured fabrics, colours, prints or accessories, you might not end up with a to-the-minute look, but that's not what style is about. Atanya has successfully worked day and night into one look. Her gorgeous knitted dress with a metallic shimmer speaks of night time glam, but she teams it up with trousers and stilettos adding a sense of formality. Not only will different combinations reflect your personality it will also increase your wardrobe size. Atanya can take that same knit dress add jeggings and ankle boots and voila a rocking party look.

It just shows you what a touch of colour can do. Zimi has cleverly taken a very basic skinny jeans and T-shirt and made it her own by adding the element of colour. The green earrings echo the shoes creating a balance in the look, while the jacket keeps it young and trendy. A beautiful black leather handbag is an item worth investing in, even if the price tag is slightly bigger. It really can transform an outfit. In Zimi's case it adds that needed touch of sophistication and style giving the outfit a slightly more grown-up look.

Thando shows exactly how it should be done and turns her oversized zebra print handbag into a statement when teaming it up with a simple-styled outfit in block colours. The tulip skirt emphasizes her waists and hips while the fabric loops on the top add volume, together they create a sexy hourglass shape. Adding a black handbag would add a more serious look while the red clutch Tavlene is wearing adds an element of fun to an elegant outfit. Dressing up is not only about the outfit but about the entire look from head to toe. It's very important that your hair and make-up compliment the outfit. Lebo's outfit has confidence written all over it. She has mixed animal prints and coloured jeans, two bold fashion statements, into one look and managed to pull it off. Essential tips to remember when wearing animal print is keep it simple, don't overdo it. Keep the silhouette uncomplicated, elegant and sleek, something Lebo understood when adding the simple vest and keeping the accessories to a minimal. Bringing animal print into your look with accessories like Lebo's shoes is a fantastic and rather easy way to add a touch of drama to your look. What a stunning colour and flattering dress. The silk scarf in a lilac, the combinations in the peacock feather earrings and then the dress all blend together into a triumph of colour that never overtakes Salem’s beautiful smile. If we just ignore the biker helmet on Phumeza’s knee, this is really a cute look. The striped leggings with the ties on the side are a lovely summery way to do the leggings look. She has cleverly worn it with a longer length tunic top so that the thighs are not compromised by the horizontal stripes and the result is wonderfully charming. The strapless top is perfect for summer and has small embellishments on it to ensure it is bang up to date. The fabrication is also expensive-looking which brings the entire outfit into the dressy realm. Gorgeous girl – great, fun outfit.

I am: 32

I work as a: mural artist and arts & crafts entrepreneur

My style is: I love setting a trend, and never follow fashion. If I do it's my trend and it's always sexy, comfortable and casual. I think you have to show what's under your clothes, I mean if you can't see the sexiness of your curves or the subtle muscles of your shoulders, you are not showing off your best. Your clothes should compliment your body. You should never cover up or hide underneath your clothes.

Robyn says:
There are two excellent components to this look. First short shorts are going to be everywhere this summer. For those of you with great legs – especially the under 25s – you need to have a pair in your closet. Those of you who are not so comfortable with this, can go for a slightly longer leg – to mid thigh and get a similar effect. Secondly, I like the gingham top. It is a fresher and more current way to do the check trend. Together they lend Tanya a country cowgirl appeal that is sexy and sweet at the same time.

With indeterminate seasons and so much travel, making sure you have a working capsule wardrobe that can address any weather on any day is key – and it ensures you get excellent value from your good quality investment basics like jeans, leggings, cotton jersey knits, dresses, scarves and cardigans.

I am
: young!

I live in
: Johannesburg.

I work as a
: recruitment executive.

My style is
: modelled on Jennifer Hudson as she is curvy and sexy and gorgeous.

Robyn says:
Nwabisa has popped a pair of leggings underneath her bright and sexy dress. This is a great way of ensuring that only one area of the body is exposed at a time. If you want to show off your legs, you cover up on top – or as Nwabisa has done here with her favourite outfit, you cover up your legs when you want to show off your greatest assets on top! The bright pink is also very hot for next summer so start investing now.

Amy Bailey http://www.cosmopolitan.co.za//Fashion/StyleCounsel/amy-bailey My name is Amy Bailey.

I am 21.

Robyn says:
This is the perfect leather jacket for the season. Amy has combined it with great skinny jeans and ankle boots which is an on-trend look. If you are feeling bold, you could go tighter on the jacket and lower on the boots for an even edgier take on this.

Brenda Singh http://www.cosmopolitan.co.za//Fashion/StyleCounsel/brenda-singh My name is Brenda Singh.

I work as a secretary.

I live in Springs (Gauteng).

My style is casual and relaxed. I dress formal for work, but weekends I love wearing my jeans and sneakers.

My style icon is Charlize Theron. She always looks her best.

Today I am wearing a mini dress with boots.

My style secret is going to gym and eating healthy to maintain my body so that I always look my best.

Robyn says:
No matter what you age, you can rock a cool tunic dress when you combine it with opaque tights and boots, like Brenda has here. You could even go for leggings if you are a bit body conscious, but the great news is that it means that minis are never out of the question.

Hot Or Not? http://www.cosmopolitan.co.za//Fashion/StyleCounsel/hot-or-not
Q: Are leggings so last year?
A: If they're plain and mid-calf, yes. But fancy, ruched, sequined or slick and shiny styles are seriously trendy for 2009. Dress them down with a cool pair of high-top sneakers or go glam with a pair of ornately carved high heels. They absolutely must be teamed with a top that covers the bum, such as a very long cotton T-shirt, as well as a boyfriend blazer.

Q: What's up with heels?
A: Chunky and spiky heels are both hot right now but what's different about them this season is that they have a platform. Shoe trends are moving to the extreme – footwear is embellished, encrusted with jewels and superhigh, and comes in head-turning colours. Banish those boring mid-heeled courts to the back of your wardrobe now!

Q: What trouser styles are in and what shoes go with them?
A: There are four main trouser shapes to look out for – skinny, boot-cut, wide-leg and peg-style trousers.
• Skinny pants work well with flat, pointy lace-ups. Team with a slick, fitted jacket or trendy blazer for a sexy rock-chic look. Skinny pants are figure-hugging and suit slim, petite shapes. They accentuate curves, so not everybody can wear them.
• Boot-cut pants look best with peep-toe platforms. Team them with a tunic and voilà – your office uniform will be sorted. Boot-cut trousers are slim-fitting down to the knees and then they flare out so that the bottoms are wide enough to accommodate boots. This style is flattering on any body type but is best suited for pear-shaped bodies.
• Peg-style trousers make a fashion-forward statement worn with extreme platforms. Last season's shoe-boot (the shoet) also works well with this style. Peg-style trousers are pleated and billowing at the top with volume at the thigh and are slim and tapered or cropped at the ankle. This edgy cut flatters taller women but will drown those with a small frame. If you are short, heels are essential. Remember to keep your upper half looking slim by wearing a fitted top or a structured jacket to balance the volume below.
• Wide-leg trousers will give the illusion of superlong legs (make sure the hem brushes the ground so that only the toes of the shoes show) when worn with a pair of high heels. If you are tall, a flat pair of loafers or men's-style brogues look fabulous with this style. The bottom of the leg is usually one-and-a-half times the width of the top. Wear a slim-fitting top with this style to give your upper body a defined shape, otherwise you may end up looking too wide all over.

Q: Are last winter's over-the-knee boots still a good buy or should I say bye-bye?
A: These long, sexy boots are superhot this season but just be careful how you wear them – looking like Julia Roberts in Pretty Woman is not the look you're after. Wear them with thick tights and a jersey dress (just make sure your hemline is less than 7,5cm above the top of the boot) or over skinny jeans. NB: Don't wear over-the-knee boots if you are short!

Q: Cocoon shapes? What is the fashion world on about?
A: Cocoon is what we call clothes with a curve, for instance balloon sleeves on tops, or egg-shaped coats and dresses, or this season's peg-style trousers. When wearing garments with this shape it's important to be aware of proportion. If you have volume on top, wear slim-fitting garments below, and vice versa, to balance out the bubble-like shape.

Q: Should I shelve my big slouchy bag?
A: Although big slouchy bags are useful, the bag you want to be seen toting for 2009 is very structured and grown-up. This structured style will either have an extra-long strap for across-the-body-style wear or ornate, glam handles that should sit in the crook of the elbow. These bags should not be worn over the shoulder. ]]>
