Find out what makes Peach, the mastermind behind Yesterday's Pupil, tick.
1. You've described your music as futuristic and deeply complex electro. How do you achieve this sound?
Hopefully, it's not always too complex. When life is complicated it tends to spill over into the music, but lately I have a way more simplistic approach to writing. I don't think it's really electro anymore either, but it is definitely futuristic. Actually, there's no need to label it as anything.
2. You made a name for yourself when you were in the band SHU. How quickly did you feel your life changed after achieving this success?
I didn't really feel any different. Looking back now, SHU was just the beginning. It takes close to a decade in this industry before you really know what the hell is going on.
3. Your music is inspired by '70s and '80s rock and synth-pop. What else influences your music on a daily basis?
Life in general - I draw a lot of inspiration from all the various emotions we feel as human beings. I find the biggest problem with modern music is that there is a total lack of emotion. Music, to me, is after all the sound of very specific but indescribable emotions. Lately, it seems like mainstream music is about sex and cash. The technology aspect seems to overpower the raw human emotion behind the music, and that is a bit sad.
4. What process do you follow when writing a song? Does it come easily to you?
Some come easily and happen quickly, but sometimes it takes years. Each song is like its own little being, which I have to learn to get along with before it's 'finished' or ready to be released. I am about to release two songs that have been over three years in the making, and that is intense - there is a lot of myself in that music. But I edited most of it out because I don't want to freak people out with emotion.
5. After releasing your first album in 2008, Errors of Enthusiasm, you've now made the first part of your new album, Singularity, available for download for free. Why make it free?
I want people to hear it. It sure beats trying to convince them to go to the store and buy it. Besides, people live in front of their computers - that's just the way it is. That's cool, but it's also really and truly kak.
6. What time of day do you work best on your music, and why?
Early in the morning and late at night. In the mornings my ears are fresh, and late at night my mind is full, so I use the music to get some of that shit out, but I edit it again in the morning.
7. Are there certain kinds of people you won't surround yourself with?
Shitty people who don't even try to be better.
8. What's better: A band with many members or a one-man show?
I love both - I play in a bunch of bands but I also go solo. I guess variety is the best.
9. Has a girl ever inspired your music? If so, how?
Yes. I have no idea how they do it.
