According to the US Food and Drug Administration, the amount of chemicals that leach into food from microwave-safe plastic is minimal and does not pose a health risk. But there are plenty of lobbyists who still claim that microwave cooking causes cancer and decreases food value. As a precaution, follow this advice:
• Microwaving water-based foods such as vegetables results in minimal losses of vitamins and minerals. However, heat generated by microwaving rapidly destroys essential fats, so avoid microwaving food with oils, nuts or seeds,' says Johannesburg dietitian Pippa Manicom.
• Dr Lawrence Gobetz, medical ¬director at the Vitalab Centre for Assisted Conception in Linksfield, Johannesburgburg, suggests only using Tupperware and clingfilm labelled 'safe for microwave use'. Leave a gap between the plastic and the food and if the microwaved food tastes like plastic, throw it out. Alternatively, use microwaveable glass containers or ceramic dishes with lids.
