Deadly Driving Mistakes

Most of us would claim to be safe drivers. After all, we monitor what we drink and watch our speed. But what about the risks we don’t realise we’re taking? Whether it’s applying makeup or checking your cell phone, if you’re distracted from the road, you could put yourself – and others – in danger.

‘Women are busier than ever and use car journeys to multitask,’ says road-accident expert Duncan Bowker. ‘Cars are far more sophisticated these days, with hi-tech stereos and GPS systems, so there’s more potential to be sidetracked.’ So how do you stay safe on the road? COSMO explains all...

Driving While Distracted	As clued-up and road savvy as we all are, sometimes common sense goes out of the window. You may think that pulling out too early at a circle or overtaking other cars will get you to your destination quicker. But what about the risks you’re taking? Duncan says, ‘When we’re running late, even safe drivers are tempted to be reckless. You may be confident in your driving but what about factors you can’t control, like other drivers or the weather? Sometimes it’s the smallest errors, such as driving too close to the car in front or not wearing a seat belt, that have the biggest consequences.’ Like using your dashboard as a dressing table. Donna Maddock, 22, was fined for putting on eyeliner while driving at 50km/hour. So while eye-skimming fringes may look fabulous, they could be blocking your view of the road. Stay Safe • Always allow extra time for journeys when the weather’s bad, or during rush hour. • If you have long hair or a fringe, keep it out of your eyes while driving. • Always wear a seat belt and make sure your passengers do the same. It’s the law, and it could save your life.
