In an ideal world, we’d get all the vitamins and minerals we need from a balanced diet. But sometimes life interferes, and taking a supplement seems like the best (and easiest) option. Sharon Natoli, director of Food & Nutrition Australia, tells us more.

‘Can taking vitamin C really stop me from getting sick?’	Yes, mixing certain vitamins can actually boost the supplements’ effectiveness. Try combos like vitamin C and iron, magnesium and calcium, or a mix of B vitamins. However, others will clash. Taking vitamin A with beta carotene, iron and vitamin E, or calcium and iron together can cause negative side effects such as vomiting or kidney stones. Always consult a professional to discuss your needs, rather than making the decision on your own.
