Don't undo the hard work you put into your diet by going wild with condiments. Let's be realistic, a salad without a dressing is dreary, but while condi¬ments add zip to snooze-worthy food, they often contain loads of fat and kilojoules. Read on for the extras you should use sparingly – and a few health¬ier alternatives suggested on the US Department of Agriculture's nutrient database.
• Instead of slathering your ham sandwich with mayonnaise (1 tbsp has 238kJ and 5g fat), try mustard (1 tbsp has just 42kJ and 0g fat).
• Replace the guacamole (1 tbsp has 104kJ and 2g fat) on your burrito with some salsa (1tbsp has 17kJ and 0g fat).
• Skip the butter (1 tsp has 150kJ and 49 fat) and instead put a little jam (1 tsp has 79kJ and 09 fat) on your toast.
• Trade French dressing (1tbsp has 289kJ and 7g fat) for vinegar (1 tbsp has 8kJ and 0g fat).
