The Healthy Tan Plan

Sun-worshippers, beware! Skin cancer is a scary reality, and excessive sun exposure and tanning are the leading cause of premature ageing. The truth is, there's no such thing as a 'healthy' tan. Being golden brown might look good, but it's actually your body's response to injury caused by the sun. That said, moderate and safe exposure to the sun provides you with necessary vitamin D. Follow this exclusive Dr Oz-approved three-step plan to getting that sun-kissed (not sun-scorched) glow.

Step #1: Repair and Rework Your Tan	• If you frequent the tanning salon, give it up immediately. Look at the tanning bed as a carcinogenic - a concentrated dose of dangerous UV rays at point-blank range. • Repair damaged skin by using a topical treatment that contains vitamin A. • If you can't give up on that glow, opt for an alternative such as bronzer, which will help you achieve a similar look without posing any of the cancer risks. Bronzers are a safe option because they remain on top of the skin (as opposed to being absorbed). • Do not go spray-tanning, as the microparticles in the spray can be inhaled and may irritate the lungs. Avoid self-tanners too, as some of the active browning ingredients in self-tanners may damage the DNA of skin cells.
