Could You Detect a Lump?

Every year we buy pink products to raise money for breast cancer research, we cry when women lose their brave fights against the disease, and we wear a ribbon during breast cancer awareness month to show that we are all sensitive to the cause. We also know that the chance of a woman developing breast cancer in her lifetime is one in 11. But can you accurately detect potentially dangerous lumps? It seems, as young women, we don't really know that much at all when it comes to our own breasts.

Time To Learn	There's been some confusion about the need for breast self-examination (BSE). While BSE has been promoted to women since the '50s, research does not support its effectiveness as a method of early detection, and there is inadequate evidence to suggest it can directly reduce deaths from breast cancer. Despite these scientific truths, experts say we should not stop checking our breasts, and should practise 'breast awareness' by familiarising ourselves with the normal look and feel of our breasts.
