Smokin!

1. Begin by applying a sheer grey or silver cream shadow over the entire lid with your finger.
2. Apply a grey or silver powder shadow over this from the lash line to the crease.
3. Use a black kohl pencil to line the upper and lower lash lines. Add emphasis by going over the upper line in short diagonal strokes and strokes and then smudging it with a slanted eye brush.
4. Using a clean brush, sweep a dark-grey powder shadow along the lash line and below the lower lashes.
5. Finish with mascara.

GOOD TO KNOW

* Use darker, richer shades – such as charcoals and plums – at night rather than simply applying your daytime makeup more heavily.
* Alternatively, use shimmers and metallics to intensify a day look for the evening.
* For a modern, understated look, accentuate either the eyes or the lips; for a strikingly dramatic look, accentuate both.
* Smoky evening eyes look good with toffee, ruby or berry stains on the lips and a pale-pink or mauve blush on the cheeks.
* To make eye makeup last longer, start by sweeping a neutral, matt eye shadow or concealer over the lids as a primer. Applying shadow with a damp brush also helps to make it last.
* You need three different eye brushes to apply makeup with professional polish: one with a firm, round tip (to press shadow onto the lid); a soft, tapered one (to blend around the eye sockets); and a flat brush (for under the eyes).
