Lose the bright colours and heavy eyeliner and opt for translucent powders and tinted lip gloss. Here's our step-by-step guide on how to perfect that natural, I-don't-care look.

STEP 1
Before you begin, always make sure your face is clean, advises Johannesburg makeup artist and image consultant, Isabel Sutherland. Then use concealer to hide any blemishes or dark shadows. Sutherland recommends Kryolan Ultra Foundation Brush-On Concealer (R294).

STEP 2
Mix a liquid foundation like Metropolitan Cosmetics' Make Up Forever Face and Body (R420 per 50ml), with your daily moisturiser to give your skin a more natural finish, says Johannesburg makeup artist, Ana Pompa. The liquid foundation will even out your skin tone, adds Sutherland. Use a small sponge for application.

STEP 3
Now use translucent powder to set your makeup, advises Sutherland. TRY Kryolan Translucent Powder (R187 per 60g).

STEP 4
'Brush through your eyebrows and fill in any gaps with powder or pencil,' says Sutherland, but be careful not to go too dark. We recommend not going darker than two shades your hair colour.

STEP 5
Apply a natural colour highlighter (Smashbox has a great product for R135) to your entire eyelid. 'Include the inner corners of your eyes, as it opens them and gives you an "awake" look,' says Pompa.

STEP 6
Use a light-coloured and medium-toned eyeshadow and build from the lids to the brow, allowing the colours to blend into each other, advises Sutherland. 'Start with a light colour that almost matches your lid and blend the lighter shade up to the brow bone to highlight. Follow with a soft, neutral colour in the crease of the eye,' she says. Then use a little bit of the darker shade under the outer corner of the eye and blend well.

STEP 7
If you want to make a huge difference to the frame of your eye, says Pompa, use thin eyeliner, such as Studio Make Up Cake in Black (R110), as close to the upper lash line as possible. This way, she says, it doesn't really look like you're wearing eyeliner.
Sutherland suggests smudging the liner a quarter of the way in, but agrees that you should focus on the upper lid only.

STEP 8
'Apply a light coat of mascara to the top lashes only,' advises Sutherland. She suggests trying either black or brown Kryolan Volumising Wand Mascara (R144). Pompa recommends wiping off the excess amount of mascara from the wand before you start.

STEP 9
Apply a minimal amount of liquid or cream blusher to the apples of your cheeks, says Sutherland. TRY Kryolan Micro Liquid Blush (R330 per 15ml).

STEP 10
A light lip gloss, like Studio Make Up Light Lip Gloss in Nectar (R169), will perfect and finish your look, concludes Pompa.
