WEEKEND Your strategy: Keep it soft and sheer during the day. At night, experiment with an ultra-glam look. Celeb makeup pro, Matin created these awesome styles.

AM: Bronzed and Breezy
• Sun-Kissed Skin: Extra sleep on the weekend helps restore circulation, making under-eye circles less obvious. So, just use a tinted moisturiser with SPF and top with bronzer, says Pati Dubroff, a celeb makeup artist for Dior.
• Radiant Cheeks: Chances are you're already rosy since you're getting more outdoor activity and vitamin-D exposure now than during the week, notes NYC dermatologist, Francesca Fusco. Opt for a sheer blush with a powder base - it will last for hours.
• Shimmery Eyes: Simply touching your eyelids feels soothing, says psychologist Andrew Williams, author of How Do You Compare? (Perigee Trade). So, stroke on a soft shadow with your finger to maintain your relaxed mode. 'Then dot liner between your lashes,' says makeup artist Mally Roncal. 'It defines your eyes without you needing loads of heavy mascara.'
• Peachy Lips: When you're out having fun, your serotonin levels may spike, which causes your lips to swell from the boost in circulation. Skip plumpers and go for an orangey-pink gloss - the warm hue matches your happy mood and golden skin tone.

PM: Seductive and Sexy
• Iridescent Skin: Many women have an instinct to connect with guys at night, explains Williams. That means you want to reveal more of yourself, skin included. To really glow, top your foundation with shimmer powder. 'Your skin will glisten in a club or the moonlight,' says Roncal.
• Tawny Cheeks: Adjust to the darkness with a deeper blush than you'd wear by day, says Matin. But apply it before you go out. Bar lighting is cave-like, so you could over-apply by accident.
• Intoxicating Eyes: 'Smoky eyes are sexy for evening,' says Matin. 'And using rich, blue shades is less predictable than black.' Apply a wash of cobalt shadow, concentrating it at your upper lash line. Drag some shadow along your lower lash line, and finish with two coats of mascara.
• Luminescent Lips: Offset your dramatic eyes with a low-key, kissable pout. 'Pale, beige lipstick looks spectacular,' says Matin. To help it stay put, dab your lips with concealer first, then pat the lipstick on with your finger instead of swiping it straight from the tube.

Cheap But Chic Beauty Tricks http://www.cosmopolitan.co.za//Beauty/Skin/cheap-but-chic-beauty-tricks-pg1
HOTTER LIPS Turn Old Into New: Instead of buying all new lipsticks, layer your existing shades to create new, fun options. Combine brown and pink to make a sultry rose, red and purple for plum, and coral and red for fuchsia.

Make Your Red Lipstick Racier: Apply pressed powder in between coats to intensify your everyday red lipstick. 'The powder pulls out the oil from the lipstick, so you're left with a deep, matte stain,' says M.A.C. senior makeup artist, Chantel Miller.

Outline Your Pucker With a Brow Pencil: To prevent your bold lip colour from creeping past the corners, 'rim your mouth with a flesh-coloured brow pencil - its waxy formula is great at preventing any smudging,' says Neutrogena cosmetic-science expert, Matin.

Pat Foundation Over Your Lips: With the nude, modern lip, you don't even need any lipstick to pull it off. 'Just dip a makeup sponge in foundation, press it to your lips, and let it dry for a few seconds,' says Dior global makeup adviser, Shane Paish. 'Finish it off with a clear lip gloss to add some shine, and you're good to go.

Makeup Tips From The Pros http://www.cosmopolitan.co.za//Beauty/Skin/makeup-tips-from-the-pros
In the past few decades makeup has become so sophisticated and user-friendly that achieving a look that is both beautiful and natural is easier than ever before. In order to make sure you always look your best, Elizabeth Arden makeup artists Gina Myers, Melissa van Zyl and Nthato Mashishi have a few simple makeup tips to help make your face your fortune.

Never skimp on quality. Since makeup is something you use on your skin every day, don't be tempted to buy a wide range of cheap products. Rather, keep your selection small and invest in only the best brands.

The most important product of all is your foundation, says van Zyl. If you have the right colour for your skin tone it forms the perfect palette for whatever other colours you choose to wear.

Make sure your foundation is suited to your skin type. If you're inclined towards oiliness, an oil-based product will clog your pores and lead to breakouts, while a very matte product could make dry skin look flaky. If you're not sure of your skin type, ask a cosmetics consultant for advice.

Remember that makeup is there to enhance your natural beauty and emphasise your best assets, says van Zyl. Beautiful, full lips? Rock them with a sexy gloss. Nice bone structure? Highlighter and blush are your BFFs. Pretty eyes? A bit of clever shading and lashings of mascara will make them even more irresistible.

Makeup trends come and go, but the trick is to incorporate them into your own personal style in a way that optimises your look, advises Myers. If you love the 'cat eye' look, for example, it's a good idea to have a makeup artist show you how to do it first, and advise on whether this look is, actually right for you. Ditto on the use of bold, 'risky' colours such as bright green, yellow or aquamarine. They can either look amazing, or completely wrong. It's much more important that your makeup work with you rather than follow trends.

Like your clothes, your makeup needs to be appropriate. Cautions Mashishi, 'A look for a business executive is totally different to one for a ramp model or night out on the town. When you buy your makeup, choose a palette that is versatile enough to create the right looks for the any occasion.'

Use the duos - today, a lot of eye shadow comes in a set of two or three colours, making it super-easy to do your own shading. For daywear, or if you're in a hurry, just apply one of the lighter shades. For evening, or if you have a bit of extra time, use two or three shades for a seductively smoky eye.

MAKEUP ARTIST FAVOURITES

Our makeup pros suggested you try the following Elizabeth Arden products:

Pure Finish Mineral Powder Foundation
for its natural-looking coverage and wide range of shades, especially for darker skin tones.

Intervene Makeup SPF 15: Its creamy texture not only gives great coverage, but also contains active anti-aging ingredients.

A Firm Chest and Neck Your chest and neck are often left out of your skincare regimen, but these delicate spots are constantly exposed to the elements, says spa owner, Joanna Vargas. Plus, they have few oil glands, making them prone to dryness. To keep both areas soft, use a gentle scrub once a week. Glide your hands back and forth instead of rubbing it on, which creates too much friction. To moisturise, extend your daily application of SPF and anti-ageing face lotion down your neck and chest, advises spa owner, Carmen Miraglia. 'A rich cream is too heavy and won't be absorbed.'

Cellulite-Free Summer http://www.cosmopolitan.co.za//Beauty/Skin/cellulite-free-summer
Did you know that applying a self-tan cream can help reduce the appearance of the orange peel effect? Try it - it works. (TRY: Guinot Self-Tanning Body Cream, R538)

Use a body brush every day in the shower, making sure to do circular motions upwards towards your heart. This helps with sluggish circulation by stimulating the lymph and blood circulation. (TRY: The Body Shop Round Body Brush, R150)

Exfoliating three times a week on the area of concern also helps with improving sluggish circulation. Try using ground coffee (a great anti-cellulite ingredient) with salt and a bit of olive oil to create your own body exfoliator.

Using a detoxifying body mask at least once a week helps with fat metabolism. Slather the mask on, and then wrap over with cling wrap. This gives a thermal effect, opening the pores and giving better product penetration of the active ingredients. (TRY: AHAVA Natural Dead Sea Body Mud, R80 per sachet)

After a warm shower, blast on the cold water for a quick rinse - sounds daunting, but the coolness after a warm shower boosts circulation and brings radiance to the skin.

Lather on a cream that contains cellulite-busting ingredients like Retinal A, Algae, Green Tea, L-Carnitine and Caffeine. (TRY: Nivea Good Bye Cellulite Gel-Cream, R99.99)

Massage can help fight cellulite, improving circulation and drainage. Book a lymph drainage massage or aromatherapy at your nearest salon, asking for a blend of detoxifying essential oils. You can even do it at home by massaging the area with firm, upward strokes using an anti-cellulite body oil. (TRY: Clarins Anti-Eau Body Treatment Oil, R440)

Make sure you're getting enough fresh fruit and veggies in your diet, avoiding food high in fat, salt and sugar, as well as limiting your alcohol intake. This all decreases the amount of toxins you are putting in your body, which eventually build up and get stored in unsightly places.

Cellulite is simply fat stored in a lumpy way. By upping your exercise routine to include a rigorous combination of cardio and toning exercises you will lose weight, thereby reducing cellulite.

Drink up! If you know you haven’t been drinking enough water, now is a good time to start. Particularly after a workout, H2O keeps your body hydrated and helps to flush out toxins.

Summer Skin http://www.cosmopolitan.co.za//Beauty/Skin/summer-skin
While everyone is getting ready for the beach, you're petrified at the thought of exposing your pasty skin. Here, a few self-tanning techniques to get your skin bronzed, glowing and bikini-ready.

To start, get rid of all unwanted hair. Once you are bronzed, removing hair also removes your self-tan leaving you with an uneven application.

Give yourself a full-body scrub, concentrating on areas like your elbows, knees and feet. This helps to remove all dead skin, creating a smooth canvas to work on.

Lather on moisturiser, focusing on knees, elbows and feet, which tend to be drier. Soft, hydrated skin allows the self-tan to blend in naturally and last longer.

Before starting your self-tan application, make sure you have plastic gloves, a headband and loose-fitting clothes to put on once you are done. If you don't have gloves, make sure to wash your hands often during application and scrub your fingernails afterwards.

To get a naturally sun-kissed tan, apply more self-tan cream to areas that are exposed to the sun, such as the front of the legs, tummy, outer arms and chest.

When it comes to the face, inner arms, knees, feet and hands (areas that are lighter), mix half a teaspoon of self-tanner with half a teaspoon of body moisturiser and apply. This is more natural, and avoids the fake, orange look.

Self-tan cream is one of the easiest types of self-tanning products to use, but make sure to rub it into your skin completely to avoid streaking.

To prolong your glowing tan, avoid exfoliating and be sure to apply a body moisturiser every night to keep your skin well hydrated.

Re-apply self-tan cream every five days or, when applying your daily body moisturiser, mix in half a teaspoon of self-tan to prolong your radiant glow.

The Perfect Paint Job http://www.cosmopolitan.co.za//Beauty/Skin/the-perfect-paint-job
When it comes to choosing the right shade, hold three colours that you like against your skin. The colour that 'pops' is the perfect one for you.

Before applying nail varnish, clean the entire nail with a cotton ball soaked in acetone. Even if your nail is 'clean', this removes any naturally occurring oils from the nail plate. This allows the varnish to last longer.

Applying a thin layer of base coat protects the nail plate from getting stained yellow and allows the colour to last longer on the nail plate.

When applying your colour, make sure there's enough varnish on the brush for the entire nail. Paint one stroke down the middle followed by one on the right side of the middle line and then on the left side. Doing this twice gives bold colour and an even application.

Clean up the sides with an orange stick soaked in acetone.

Finish off with a thin layer of top coat to give extra gloss and protection to the colour you have applied.

A mistake people often make after finishing off is trying to blow, wave or even use a hairdryer to dry the nails… don't! This causes your nail varnish to bubble. Rather be patient and let it dry naturally for a guaranteed smooth-looking nail.

The Pill and Pigmentation http://www.cosmopolitan.co.za//Beauty/Skin/the-pill-and-pigmentation-pg1
Why It Happens Pregnant women often develop a condition called chloasma (or, the 'mask of pregnancy') whereby areas of skin on the face become dark, most often the upper lip, forehead and cheeks. The way the contraceptive pill works is by delivering a series of hormones that 'trick' the body into thinking it's pregnant, and these same hormones can cause hyper-pigmentation in women taking the pill. As Dr Dasoo explains, 'Some women have a predisposition to developing chloasma, and this can occur when they are exposed to oestrogen and, to a lesser extent, progesterone – both of which are found in the contraceptive pill.'

The Regular This is the most common of styles where hair is removed only along the panty line. When waxing, always make sure that the therapist uses hot wax (the harder type of wax) and not cold wax with strips. As Mans explains, 'It's not professional at all to use strip wax (cold wax) on sensitive areas such as the face, bikini area or underarms. Strip wax should only be used on tougher skin and large areas such as legs, arms, back or chest.' To prevent those dreaded ingrown hairs, use a soft-bristle brush and liquid cleanser in a circular motion to dislodge the tips of ingrown hairs, get rid of dead skin cells and clear follicles to allow hairs to surface unimpeded.

After having your wax, make sure to exfoliate twice a week to manage any ingrown hairs. To reduce redness and bumps after waxing, apply an un-perfumed lotion that contains chamomile, as perfume can irritate the sensitive waxed area.

Makeup SOS http://www.cosmopolitan.co.za//Beauty/Skin/makeup-sos
When it comes to specific products, Leanne Harrison, Inglot makeup artist, says 'Foundations and concealers should be kept no longer than six to 12 months, and wand-applicator concealers should be tossed within six months since they're likely to grow bacteria. Stick, twist-up tubes, or compact concealers can last up to 12 months; lipstick or gloss can be kept for six months while eye and lip pencils can last a year or longer if you sharpen them every few days.'

EYE MAKEUP ALERT
On the other hand, facial powder, blush and eye shadow can last up to 18 months, whereas cream eye shadow and blush stay okay from between six months to a year. Mascara should be replaced every three to four months, and avoid 'pumping' the wand in the tube because this allows in air and bacteria causing the mascara to dry out, which increases your chances of developing an eye infection. If an eye infection does develop you will have to throw away any used eye makeup to avoid re-infecting yourself,' says Harrison. Makeup brushes are particularly prone to accumulating dirt and bacteria, which can lead to breakouts. As Harrison explains, 'It's important to wash them at least once a week with your facial cleanser under warm, running water and then allow to air dry. If you like using makeup sponges, only use them once and then throw them away; sponges can become very unhygienic therefore replacing them often is better.'

SHARING ISN'T CARING
Some general tips on keeping your makeup safe before it expires: if you apply makeup with your fingers, always wash your hands first. Don't add water (unless advised to do so) or saliva to dilute the makeup as this introduces bacteria into the product, which can cause a host of problems. Keep cosmetics in a dry, cool place, away from direct heat or sunlight. Most importantly of all, don't share your makeup - swapping germs will cause your products to expire very quickly.

Caring For Ethnic Skin http://www.cosmopolitan.co.za//Beauty/Skin/caring-for-ethnic-skin
Contrary to popular belief, ethnic skin often requires gentler treatment and more care than other skin types. Because of the melanin pigment present in ethnic skin, blemishes and scarring caused by pimples are more visible, and can play havoc with your complexion.

Connie Matutle, a 21-year-old drama student from Cape Town, has suffered with acne since she was 13-years-old. 'Having acne has always been part of my life. The older I get the fewer breakouts I have, but the dark scars caused by the spots are still very visible,' she says. While she uses foundation to cover them up when she goes out, Connie would like a longer-lasting alternative because she doesn't like using makeup all the time. 'Some women see good results with treatments such as chemical peels and laser treatments, but they must be administered by a dermatologist or a qualified skin therapist', says Maryanne Ibekwe, R&D expert from Unilever. 'We have had many women achieve great results from the Ponds Flawless Radiance range, which contains a powerful complex VAO B3 that gets to work quickly on dark marks,' she explains.

YOUR SKIN IN WINTER
The harsh conditions of winter often cause skin to lose moisture, which causes dryness and, for some, flaking of the skin. Ibekwe advises on always using a good moisturising cream or lotion. 'Stay away from oil-control products, which dry the skin out, and exfoliate regularly to remove dead skin cells', she says. 'The Ponds Intense Moisture Nourishing Cream was specifically developed for dry skin (it contains omega 6). It transforms skin moisture levels and leaves skin visibly more supple and soft,' she adds.

YOUR SKIN IN SUMMER
Generally, those with darker skin tones are able to tolerate exposure to the sun without getting burnt. However, this doesn't mean that prolonged exposure to the sun won't be harmful to your skin. The common misconception amongst darker-skinned people is that they do not have to use sun protection. This is what Sivu Cawe, a 23-year-old publicist from Johannesburg, has always believed. 'I came across an article last year about a dark-skinned women who suffered premature ageing because of sun damage. She was only 28-years-old, but looked like she was my mother's age!' she says. Only then did she realise the importance of protecting her skin from the sun - even in winter.

Using sunscreen on ethnic skin is very important. 'It's a simple step that so many women neglect to add to their regime,' says Ibekwe. 'Wearing sunscreen protects against sun- induced pigmentation, dark marks which cause uneven skin tone and sun-induced premature ageing,' she adds. In a sunny climate like South Africa, where we get sun all year round, this protection is vital to the ongoing health of your skin.

Get Luscious Lips http://www.cosmopolitan.co.za//Beauty/Skin/get-luscious-lips-pg1 More Alive With Color (Capital Books). 'Just looking at them can turn you on.' Take a peek at the three options we show here, which you can wear either day or night. 'Layering will make any colour more or less intense on you,' explains makeup artist Denise Markey. 'So it's really just about having fun.' Sweet!

A Taste Of Grape Of all the hues, grape is the most mysterious, according to Eiseman. 'It has a darkness to it that can be incredibly exotic and intriguing,' she points out. Don't paint on heavy purple though - go for a soft grape stain that lets your natural lip colour come through a bit. 'This way, the shade will accentuate your skin tone and won't seem too severe,' says Markey. Make sure your mouth is a good canvas by smoothing on a balm to loosen dry flakes and give you extra plumpness. Rub on a purple stain with your fingers, starting in the centre and spreading it out to the edges. Finish by gently smushing your lips together. 'This sets the colour in a way that's not too perfect or precise,' explains Markey. 'The effect should be lived-in, like you've been kissed.'

Healthy Skin Tip #1: Your Body Has Another Cancer Danger Zone Your legs are the number one spot where melanoma strikes. But a study has found that women are also much more likely to develop melanoma on the chest, stomach, and back than they were a generation ago. 'Because of low-rise jeans and halter tops, a woman's middle racks up exposure to the sun like never before,' explains dermatologist Sandra Reed. Just as you slather sunscreen with an SPF of 15 on your legs and arms, rub it onto your mid-section as well.

Flaunt a Flawless Face, Every Day …with assistance from professional makeup artist, Elsa Morgan.

How To Get The Dewy, Glowing Look

1. Massage some rosehip oil onto your skin, then apply a small amount of skin perfecter. This gives you a glow that'll show through foundation.

2. Apply a small amount of sheer, liquid foundation (using your fingers) on areas that require coverage, then dab concealer under the eyes and over imperfections.

3. After your eyes, cheeks and lips are done, pat a shimmer cream (gold on darker skin, silver on fair skin) on to the browbone and cheekbones.

4. For a natural, non-greasy finish, apply a light dusting of powder.

How To Get The Velvety-Matte Look

1. After moisturising, apply a full coverage, matte foundation all over the face using a foundation brush to control application. (You can contour and highlight with blush/
illuminators later on.)

2. Apply a creamy concealer under eyes and around the nostrils, then hide any imperfections with a waxy concealer.

3. Lightly dust your foundation with powder for a perfect, polished look.

Try Pulse-Raising Red Lips You already know that the colour red epitomises love and passion, but get this: Studies have shown that when people look at a crimson hue, their pulses actually speed up and their respiration rates increase, explains Lisa Herbert, executive vice president of Pantone. 'Red is extremely energetic and sends the message that you are sexy and exciting,' she says. So, what better hue to wear on your lips to (literally) make your date's heart race? But instead of going for a classic creamy formula, try a high-shine sheer gloss which looks really juicy and sexy. Since glosses tend to wear off easily (especially if you're smooching) apply a rosy lip stain first, says US-based makeup artist Melissa Silver. This will give the gloss something to grab on to. Then layer on a sparkly red gloss.

Tricks Worth Knowing http://www.cosmopolitan.co.za//Beauty/Skin/tricks-worth-knowing

1. Find The Perfect Foundation
This is one of the potentially trickiest buys. Everyone needs two shades: a light one for winter and a slightly warmer one for summer. If you have these two, you can combine them to get the perfect colour. (Mix them in your hands before applying, not on your face!)

2. Concealer Is Your Best Friend
But applied in the wrong way, it can also be your worst enemy. If you're wearing only a little makeup, apply it to the inner corners of your eyes to brighten. If you're wearing a full face of makeup, then brush from the inner corners all the way out.

3. Big Lip Trick
Trying to make your lips look bigger with liner is a road to disaster. Unless you don't drink/eat/talk/kiss, your lipstick will wear off. To plump up lips, use a pale lip-gloss - and remember, natural-looking, small lips are a hundred times more attractive than fake-looking big ones.

4. Brow-Disaster SOS
You've plucked and just didn't know when to stop, and now - oops! - you have a bare patch. Choose a pencil or shadow (to apply with a specialised brow brush) that's a shade lighter than your brows for the most natural-looking fill-in.

5. When Clean Is Too Clean
If your skin feels really tight after you've washed, stop using whatever it is you are abusing your face with - right now! After cleansing, you should feel fresh but not stripped.

6. Too Much Powder Is Ageing
Applying powder all over your face is too mask-like, so pat it only where you might get oily, such as on your forehead, nose and chin. Nobody needs powder on their temples, cheeks or the under-eye area. A bit of sheen is more natural.

7. You Can Never Wear Too Much Mascara
But to avoid a clumpy mess, learn how to apply it like a pro: use the wand like you would a round brush when you blow-dry your hair - really get it into your roots and then pull it through to tips, lifting the lashes as if you were trying to curl them. Applying a waterproof mascara to the lower lashes is guaranteed to prevent that grubby racoon-eye, late-smudge.

8. Foot Rescue
Out of sight... out of mind. Our poor feet often don't get the attention they need. Get rid of dry heels and neglected soles with this quick-fix solution: Cut a lemon in half and rub over any areas of thickened skin. The acidity will act as a natural exfoliate.

9. Hair-Colour Tip
A few days before colouring your hair, give yourself a deep-conditioning treatment. Well-nourished hair locks in pigment better and more evenly than dried, porous strands. Your colour will stay vibrant and last longer.

10. Fix a Fake-Tan Disaster
Before resigning yourself to wearing pants for the next week, try exfoliating the area gently, but don't scrub until your skin goes red. Take a matt liquid bronzer and dot over the lighter areas to disguise any marks.

1. Powder Most likely created around the same time as the wheel, powder blush (or 'rouge', as your grandmother likes to call it) is the most common and easy to apply. This is great, because it can be applied over matte foundation and translucent powder. It’s best to start lightly and build up the colour over a few well-thought-out strokes.

The DIY Manicure http://www.cosmopolitan.co.za//Beauty/Skin/the-diy-manicure

1. Fill a bowl with warm, soapy water and soak your hands for a few minutes to soften the skin and the nails.

2. Wash your hands with a gentle soap and give them a good scrub with exfoliator to get rid of dead skin cells and make them super-soft.

3. If necessary, remove any old nail polish.

4. Shape nails using a fine-grit file - it'll prevent nicks in the side of the nails, as it's gentler than other files.

5. Apply a cuticle treatment and gently push back the cuticles using a cuticle stick.

6. Apply a thick layer of hand-cream, cover your hands with a pair of plastic gloves and relax in front of TV for ten minutes while your hands get soften.

7. Using water only, rinse off the hand cream and dry your hands with a towel.

8. Before you apply nail polish always apply a base coat, as this protects the nail and helps prevent chipping.

9. Apply one coat of polish in three neat strokes, starting in the centre and extending to the tip. Wait until it's completely dry, then apply a second coat.

10. Always follow up with a top coat to prolong the life of your manicure.

Caring For Winter Skin http://www.cosmopolitan.co.za//Beauty/Skin/caring-for-winter-skin
As the days get shorter and cooler and shoe-string straps are slowly replaced by chunky knits, some people notice a change in the texture and feel of their skin. This is because during the heat of summer more sweat and oil are produced and, even though the air is warmer, the skin remains more hydrated. As autumn and winter roll on, humidity in the air decreases, and drier air can have an effect on certain kinds of sensitive skin, making it red and flaky. While it seems logical to switch from a lighter to a heavier moisturiser and use a milder cleanser in the winter months, is it in fact necessary to change your skin-care routine or use different products when the season changes?

'For most people, changing products is not necessary,' says Environ Scientific Advisor, Dr Ernst Eiselen. 'Some individuals experience a drop in metabolic rate during the winter months which means that they require less vitamins to obtain the same effect as higher doses in summer. In this case, usually products with one strength lower of vitamin A are appropriate.' Some people are affected by seasonal acne, in which case a gentler cleanser can prevent the skin from becoming irritated. A humidifier also helps prevent the skin from drying out. 'If the skin feels drier and seems to need additional moisture, a product like Environ's Super Moisturiser is a good one to include in your cleansing and moisturising routine,' advises Dr Eiselen.

More important than changing your products when the weather gets cooler is making sure you use a product that is suited to the South African environment, explains Dr Eiselen. While there are countless products on the market, it's important to use a product specifically designed for skin exposed to the harshness of the South African climate. Environ was developed for South African conditions and is therefore suitable for most people, as opposed to products developed in diametrically different climates.'

The best products to use through summer and winter are the Original range and the Ionzyme range, the latter being a little more high-end. 'What makes the Environ choice is the fact that its products work equally well in the summer and the winter months, which makes the range flexible and easy to use,' says Dr Eiselen. Keep an eye on your skin – if you notice a change and it seems as if your products are not delivering what they should, consider a step down in strength in your moisturiser for winter to accommodate a slower metabolism, or supplement your regime by adding a good, light night cream with low vitamin A if you don't use one already. In summer, switch back to higher strengths.

PRE-MAKEUP PRIMERS Primer is the buzzword for makeup artists everywhere, but what on earth is it? The pre-makeup primer is your answer to seamless foundation application. It's the last step in your skincare and the first step in your makeup routine. Like hair conditioner, it actually works by hydrating and smoothing the skin. It also prevents makeup sinking into lines or pores and helps to prolong the life of foundation.

The Best Beauty Tips Ever http://www.cosmopolitan.co.za//Beauty/Skin/the-best-beauty-tips-ever 1. Why wait until bedtime to take off your make-up and leave the gunk and free radicals wreaking havoc on your skin all evening? If you're not going anywhere, take your makeup off as soon as you get home and let your skin breathe a sigh of relief.

2. Rescue hard, hobbit-like bits of skin on your feet by rubbing lemon all over the problem areas; it will naturally exfoliate and soften soles.

3. If you like the feeling of tightness after washing your face, rethink your pleasure principles. It means that you've over-cleansed your skin, stripping it of the oils that keep it flexible and protected from spot-causing bacteria. Stick to gentle cleansing products instead.

4. Sensitive souls should look for products that contain less than 10 ingredients – this means there are fewer preservatives which can irritate skin.

5. You poor body is so often neglected when it comes to moisturiser – and then you go and blast it with a boiling-hot shower. Save your skin (and the environment) by turning down the temperature dial a couple of notches.

6. Your eyebrows are sisters, not twins, so don't spend hours trying to make them look the same, or you'll run the risk of over-plucking.

7. To find your perfect foundation colour, try a few shades on your jaw-line, grab a mirror, then step outside into natural light. Never trust fluorescent shop lights.

8. If you favourite mascara has become a bit dry, liquefy it again by placing the sealed tube in hot water.

9. Fake a manicure by applying a coat of ridge filler – its pinkish tint mimics sheer polish and it dries smooth in seconds.

10. Steer clear of magnifying mirrors when you're applying foundation; you'll see all the tiny flaws and be scared into slapping on too much. Instead, stand about a metre away from an ordinary mirror and dab on where it looks like you need it, then go up close to blend.

11. If you don't want to draw attention to those dark circles under your eyes, keep your lower lashes mascara-free. Black, cloggy eyelashes will just make shadows look worse.

Burlesque Beauty http://www.cosmopolitan.co.za//Beauty/Skin/burlesque-beauty-pg1 Burlesque is about sexiness, decadence and unleashing your inner vixen. To recreate the Burlesque look, Smashbox has brought out the Burlesque Limited Colour Collection (R565) which includes everything you'll need to recreate this high-glam look at home. We asked Smashbox representative Lauren Engelbrecht to show us how.

EYES Step 1: Pat a light shade of pink over your entire lower lid, says Engelbrecht.

Step 2: Generously apply purple eye shadow into the natural crease of your lid, she says. The aim, she adds, is for there to be a distinct difference between the pink and purple shades, so be bold with your colour.

Step 3: Use a shimmery beige shadow over the existing purple shadow for a professional finish, suggests Engelbrecht.

Step 4: To highlight your eyes, use a fan brush to dust shimmer powder under your brow bone, she says. (TRY: Smashbox Fan Brush #22, R145). Go over your entire eyelid for a glamorous finish, she adds.

Step 5: Apply liquid liner along your upper lash line, boldly extending it on the outer corner of your eye in an up-and-outward direction, she says.

Step 6: Using a smudge brush (TRY: Smashbox Double Ended Smudge Brush, R240), apply cream eye shadow and charcoal liner along your lower lash line. To create a sexy, smouldering effect, she recommends gently smudging the silvery charcoal blend, instead of making a harsh line.

Step 7: Finally, apply generous coats of black mascara on both your top and bottom lashes, she says. (TRY: Smashbox Hyperlash Mascara in Black, R180).

Surprising Saboteur #1: Your BlackBerry or Cell Phone Why It Is Bad For Your Skin:
You may have thought the only drawback to your wireless gossip sessions was the bill. But a study by Howard Murad, MD, associate clinical professor of dermatology at UCLA, found that having fewer face-to-face conversations with your friends, combined with the pressure to keep up with the increasingly fast pace of life, can cause what he calls cultural stress. And as you may know, stress is often responsible for many physical annoyances, like excess oil production, reduced circulation, and water loss in your skin-cell walls, all of which can lead to breakouts, dullness, and dehydration, says Dr. Murad.

What You Can Do:
Ward off stress by carving out at least two hours once a week to bond with your buds in person, says Dr. Murad. Also, in addition to a stellar skin-care routine, Dr. Murad recommends eating lots of fruits, veggies, and fish. These foods possess anti-inflammatory properties, which help to keep your complexion under control, even when your life isn't.

Bewitching Looks http://www.cosmopolitan.co.za//Beauty/Skin/bewitching-looks-pg1 The Vampire Diaries hardly ever wears makeup, the star herself loves to experiment with over-the-top looks… and we love it.

Here, Kryolan make-up artist, Leigh Richardson, shows you how to recreate two of Graham's colourful looks. All recommended products are available from Kryolan.

Before you apply any makeup, says Richardson, you need to cleanse, tone and moisturise you face. Smear foundation over the eyelids, lips and ears (if visible) and contour your cheekbones, forehead and nose with a foundation that is three shades darker than your natural colour, she says. (TRY: Ultra Foundation Cream, R170) Apply loose translucent powder over your whole face and brush off any excess with a powder brush, she explains. (TRY: Translucent Powder Puff, R187)

Eye-Catching To get Katerina Graham's eye-catching look, follow these four easy steps.

Step 1
Apply powder eye shadow on the top your eye, along the lash line and going up into the crease of your eye, says Richardson. (TRY: Anthracite Eye Shadow, R93)

Step 2
For highlighting purposes, use a satin powder slightly above the crease on your eyelid, she says. With the same colour, line the inside corner of your eye, as well as three-quarters of the way along the bottom of the eye, she explains. (TRY: Silver Satin Powder, R105).

Step 3
Use a dark satin powder to outline the bottom of your eye, taking it out at the corner to elongate your eye slightly, she recommends. (TRY: Anthracite Satin Powder, R105)

Step 4
Apply black liquid eyeliner, using a thin brush for easy control, says Richardson. Next, she explains, apply black mascara to separate your lashes. Lastly, define your brows with a black pencil, she adds. (TRY: Black Eye Liner, R135, Long Lash Mascara, R207 and Classic Eyebrow Pencil, R93)

Bobbi's Best Tips http://www.cosmopolitan.co.za//Beauty/Skin/bobbis-best-tips-pg1
Here are my prescriptions for your most common cold weather beauty woes.

Five Steps to Beating the Winter Blahs
1. Self tanner
2. Intensive moisturiser
3. Creamy concealer and foundation
4. Cream blush
5. Lip gloss

Flaky Patches Be gentle and use a product with alpha-hydroxy acids to help encourage cell turnover and remove dead cells accumulating on your skin’s surface. Use manual exfoliators (scrubs with beads or grains) less frequently. After cleansing, moisturise with a super-rich face cream. To reap the biggest benefits from your moisturiser, apply it while your skin is still slightly damp. Creamy makeup formulas are a dry skin’s best friend because they are moisture-based. Look for moisturising foundations, tinted creams and cream blush (in a stick or compact). Use powder sparingly or skip it; when cream formulas are applied over powder they don’t spread evenly and can end up looking cakey.

CERTIFIED DOUBTS
It seems everything is ‘certified organic’ these days, but Caro Copeland, CEO of Tocara Skin and Body Science and an international trainer for Dr. Hauschka warns you to be wary of this guarantee. A product can only be considered the real deal if the whole product including all of its ingredients has been certified by a legal body, says Robyn Astl, founder and co-owner of Faithful To Nature.

‘There seem to be different requirements from different boards on the percentage of organic matter required in order to be certified organic,’ says Copeland. Make sure there is a reputable certification board’s logo on the box of a product stating whether it’s certified natural or organic before you buy it.

DODGY SYNTHETICS
Melissa Whittle from Clarins believes the most important aspect to consider when buying an organic beauty product is to check what percentage is actually organic. ‘Most products only need a small percentage of organic ingredients to be labelled organic or natural.’
‘Organic claims don’t need to be verified, so be vigilant of conventional products trying to pass as organic,’ agrees Esse Organic Skincare representative, Dee Steyn. ‘Some include the smallest percentage of an organic ingredient and trump the claim.’ She suggests educating yourself on ingredient listings so you can understand product’s labels. ‘Get in touch with companies and ask questions: honest, sincere suppliers should have no trouble giving you the low down.’

Some product ranges claim to have ‘organic active ingredients’, adds Copeland, but what they add to these active ingredients to keep them preserved is a little perturbing. This marketing strategy is misguiding, she says, as you will see ‘organic active ingredients’ typed in bold, but underneath it you’ll find all sorts of synthetic chemical preservatives, fragrances and colourants.

Astl agrees. ‘Synthetic skincare products do not have any therapeutic value and come hand in hand with many undesirable effects.’

OH-SO-ORGANIC
We’ve found a few organic products which are safe to invest in.

Clarins Gentle Soap (R225)
‘This is our first organic product,’ says Whittle. Certified natural and organic, this soap contains 99% natural ingredients, including organic shea butter and hazelnut oil.

Trevarno Nail Conditioner (R115 per 15ml)
‘Trevarno’s certified products are at least 95% organic for their creams, with the other 5% comprising of the purest natural ingredients,’ says Astl. ‘Oil products in the range are 100% organic.’
Available at: Faithful To Nature

Esse Rich Moisturiser (R285.50 per 50ml)
Contains anti-oxidant and omega-6 enriched marula oil, as well as olive leaf extract, which improves the skin’s elasticity. It is 100% natural and 77% organic.

Cute-Sexy or Sexy-Sexy? http://www.cosmopolitan.co.za//Beauty/Skin/cute-sexy-or-sexy-sexy-pg1
Recent research suggests that ‘cute’ qualities stimulate the same pleasure centers in the brain that are aroused by sex, according to Stephan Hamann, PhD, associate professor of psychology at Emory University. Read: Whether you’re sexy or cute, you have the potential to drive a guy wild.

While a sexy-sexy woman appears fertile and powerful and a cute-sexy woman seems more innocent and flirty, they both can be very attractive, says Lionel Tiger, PhD, a professor of anthropology at Rutgers University. Take this quiz to pinpoint which pretty party you’re a member of, then scoop up the tips that’ll play up your features the most.

Grab a mirror, then answer these quick questions to find out which one best describes you.

1. Do you have round, wide-set eyes?
(a) YES | (b) NO
2. Are you lips really full and lush?
(a) NO| (b) YES
3. Do people ask to pinch your cheeks?
(a) YES | (b) NO
4. Can you see the lines of your cheek-bones without sucking in your cheeks?
(a) NO| (b) YES
5. Is your natural brow shape more softly round than angular and archlike?
(a) YES | (b) NO
Mostly As
Mostly Bs

IF YOU’RE CUTE-SEXY...
The features that drive your look home most are your cheeks and eyes. Here, we show you how to foxify them.
Colour your cheeks: Dab a creamy petal pink blush only on the apples of your cheeks, says Eric Sakas, creative director of Kevyn Aucoin Beauty. Blend well in a circular motion, and use just a bit, otherwise, you could look a little too cute, like a Raggedy Ann doll. Polish it off with a dot of highlighter on the center of each apple. It will give your cheeks a fresh, flushed glow, says Sakas.
Open your orbs: ‘Rim the outer halves of your upper and lower lash lines to make your eyes appear rounder,’ says Jodie Boland, a makeup artist. Go for brown or gray pencil – they’re softer than black. Next, blend a girlie shadow colour, like baby blue or lavender, over the liner, suggests Boland. Apply one coat of lengthening mascara, and maintain a slightly rounded brow shape.

IF YOU’RE SEXY-SEXY…
Your bone structure and lips are your standout features. Highlight your hotness by cribbing these tips.
Chisel your cheekbones: First, brush a warm, tawny blush onto the apples of your cheeks, then sweep a slightly darker bronzer in the hollow underneath the cheekbones. Using two different shades will add extra depth and dimension, explains Sakas. Contouring can go from subtle to overdone in seconds (think early '80s), so go lightly. Finish by blending a highlighter on the highest part of your cheekbones, he says.
Amplify your pout: Line and fill in your mouth with a flesh-toned pencil (as close to your natural lip color as possible) to enhance the Angelina-styIe shape of your lips, says Surratt. Then, apply a lipstick that’s two or three shades darker than your lips, says Boland. Finally, dot shimmery, gold-toned gloss on the center of your lips to catch the light and leave you with a full, pouty look, says Sakas.

Big Beauty Sins http://www.cosmopolitan.co.za//Beauty/Skin/big-beauty-sins 1. NIBBLING ON YOUR CUTICLES
Why It's a No-No: Torn cuticles lead to hangnails and infections, says Jessica Vartoughian, owner of nail clinic in Los Angeles.
Rehab: Keep the skin around your nails moisturised, says Vartoughian. 'If it's hydrated, you'll have fewer snags and be less tempted to pick at it.' Rub a thick cream or oil into your cuticles daily and massage them with an exfoliator every few days. Also, push overgrown skin back with a cuticle stone after showering, when they're soft. You can also try a bitter-tasting nail polish designed to discourage the habit.

2. SWAPPING YOUR HAIR COLOUR FREQUENTLY
Why It's a No-No: Trading your hair tint occasionally is okay, but dyeing it too often can make it weak and lead to an identity crisis. Sure, celebrities constantly switch up their hair hue, but they do it for a movie or to capture attention on the red carpet. And they put in major money and extra TLC to undo or hide the damage.
Rehab: First, try diverting your desire for novelty from hair colour to makeup, since it’s easier to experiment with lipstick and eye shadow on a weekly basis. And when you get to the point that you just have to colour your coif, take this advice from Pantene celebrity colourist Rita Hazan: Be a smart blond. Bleach is the most damaging and drying ingredient. It's okay to hit the bottle once every six weeks if you're only brightening up a shade or two. lf you want to be lighter than that, use a bleaching kit once a month, going one level blonder each time until you reach your desired hue. Going darker is less damaging. Adding colour to your hair isn't as stressful to your strands since you aren't stripping away any natural pigment. You can use a permanent dye every four weeks and an ammonia-free semipermanent formula every three weeks. Use a conditioning regimen. Post-colour, apply the kit's deep conditioner. Also, use a hair mask twice a week.

3. GOING TO BED WITHOUT WASHING YOUR FACE
Why It's a No-No: Sleeping with mascara and eye makeup on can cause you to wake up with puffy bags and maybe even an infection, says celebrity dermatologist Dr Patricia Wexler. And layers of foundation, concealer and blush will stop your skin from breathing and clog up your pores, making your complexion acne-prone and dull-looking. Even if you didn't wear makeup during the day, your skin accumulates oil and dirt, both of which can also lead to pimples if not washed away in the evening.
Rehab: Keep a pack of premoistened face wipes next to your bed. This way, no matter how tired you are (or how many cocktails you've had), you can swipe away your makeup in seconds, without rinsing.

4. FAKE-BAKING IN A TANNING BED
Why It's a No-No: Ultraviolet-A rays (the kind emitted primarily from tanning-bed bulbs) are called aging rays for a reason – they penetrate your connective tissue, causing premature aging and the proliferation of free radicals. Plus, UVA rays have been linked to skin cancer and can suppress your immune system, says Dr. Wexler.
Rehab: It's so easy to fake a safe and believable tan from a bottle, thanks to the latest body lotions that are spiked with just a hint of self-tanner. But unlike regular moisturisers, apply this variety to totally dry skin, since excess water can cause the colour to develop unevenly, says Cindy Barshop, owner of a beauty salon. After 24 hours, assess your glow. lf you're craving a more golden look, rub on another coat, and repeat daily until you reach your desired level of bronze.

5. TORTURING YOUR HAIR WITH HEAT
Why It's a No-No: Wielding a hair dryer, curling iron, or flatiron daily (or a combo of any of the above) will dry out your locks, leaving them dull, frizzy, and weak, says Joico artist Anthony Morrison, owner of the Londoner Salon in Los Angeles.
Rehab: While blowdrying, stick to a medium heat and speed setting and keep the nozzle a few inches away from your hair, says Morrison. When using a flatiron, quickly slide the iron down a section of hair in one smooth motion. Any pauses along the way will create dents that will require another run-through with the iron to fix. If you're curling your hair, release the coiled section after no more than five seconds. It's also a good idea to keep your heat-styling sessions to a minimum, only blasting your locks with a dryer a couple of times a week instead of daily. When you wash your hair, use a moisturizing shampoo to keep strands supple.

6. OVERBLEACHING YOUR TEETH
Why It's a No-No: Your pearly whites can only get so bright, no matter how many times you bleach them, so any treatments you do after reaching your maximum level of whiteness (they shouldn't be bluish or whiter than the whites of your eyes) are more hurtful than helpful, says Cyrus Tahmasebi, a dentist with BriteSmile. 'Constantly applying hydrogen peroxide to your teeth can leave them ultrasensitive and prone to chipping.'
Rehab: If you're going to a professional, you can expect your teeth to whiten up about eight to nine shades (think the subtle difference between colours of paint). On the other hand, if you're using an at-home kit, you'll probably see about a four-shade improvement. Be sure to follow the instructions on the box carefully, and don't re-bleach until at least six months later, says Dr. Tahmasebi.

7. POPPING YOUR PIMPLES
Why It's a No-No: You should maintain a strict hands-off policy when it comes to your pimples. Can't resist? How's this for motivation: Messing with a pimple can extend its staying power to seven to 10 days instead of the normal two to three, since the dirt from your fingers can force bacteria into your pores and cause an infection, says Dr. Wexler.
Rehab: Practice patience and apply either a benzoyl peroxide or salicylic acid potion twice daily – in three days, it should be clear. In the meantime, squirt a cotton swab with redness-reducing eyedrops, then place it on your pimple. Follow with a dab of concealer.

Beauty Brushes http://www.cosmopolitan.co.za//Beauty/Skin/beauty-brushes-pg1
'The right tools are just as important as the makeup itself,' says international makeup artist, Bobbi Brown. 'Invest in a good set of brushes and you'll find that with proper care, they can last for years.'

If don't know what to look out for, take note: 'A good brush should feel soft against your skin and its bristles shouldn't fall out,' says Brown.

Before you buy anything, says Clarins representative, Melissa Whittle, get a beauty consultant at your local makeup counter to show you how each brush is used.

Before you apply your eyeshadow and start blending, you'll need to use this brush to make sure your eye liner application stays accurate, says Whittle.

This brush will create a precise and even line, says Brown, especially if you're applying dark eyeshadow.

Helpful hint: If you want to go for a smoky effect or need to blend your eyeliner, this smaller, more precise brush is your best option, suggests Whittle.

Tattoo Tester http://www.cosmopolitan.co.za//Beauty/Skin/tattoo-tester TatMash is a new website create for individuals who aren't exactly sure what to get inked, or where to have it done. And it's really simple; upload your design or choose from an extensive list of generic tattoos before uploading a picture of yourself, or at least the area where you would like to get your new tattoo.

WHAT IS TATMASH ALL ABOUT?
'The site was created because I was trying to help a friend who wanted a tattoo,' says the California-based founder of the TatMash, Bob Nebrig. After using Photoshop to show his friend what her ink would look like, he decided to create a website. 'I realised there had to be an easier way to do this and that there were probably many people like my friend who would like to try on their tattoo ideas without the complications of Photoshop', he says.

'I also thought that a lot of people who would never get a tattoo would have fun seeing what they might look like with one. In order for this to be accessible to everyone, it had to be easy. So, we created a website that would be very simple to use.'

After only three weeks, the website has blown up, says Nebrig. In the past week, they've had more than 250 000 visitors from Brazil alone. 'We were surprised that people all over the world are excited about using our website.'

WHAT'S IN IT FOR YOU
'TatMash is an electronic fitting room. There are many choices that will affect how a tattoo will look on a particular person,' says Nebrig. The site allows you apply your tattoo designs to your photo and 'a user can try out different designs on various parts of their body, and tattoos can range from very large to very small.'

If you don't have a specific idea in mind, TatMash has thousands of tattoos for you to browse through, and every day, hundreds more are posted. 'Our tattoo library is starting to mushroom,' says Nebrig.

'The language of tattooing is worldwide and the site is simple enough that people from all over the world are able to use it,' says Nebrig. Plus, it's free!

So before heading down to your local tattoo shop, test your tat. It can't do any harm. ]]>

Autumn Lips http://www.cosmopolitan.co.za//Beauty/Skin/autumn-lips apply dark lipstick perfectly, so here are a few important do's and don'ts you should keep in mind throughout the new season.

Buy trendy colours like plums or deep reds in the smallest quantities possible, so you have enough for one season only, says makeup artist Leigh Richardson. You don't need old lip colours filling your draws. If you're on a tight budget, invest in the classics: a true red without blue or orange undertones, a nude and a light pink lipstick will always see you through.

DARK DO'S
• Always apply base and powder to your lips before you put on dark lipstick, says Richardson. The base will ensure your lipstick stays on for longer and the powder will make sure the base doesn't come off.
• Use a brush. This way, she says, you'll ensure the lipstick fills in any crevices not covered by the base and powder.
• Always blot with a dry tissue, she advises, as it will absorb the oil in the lipstick. 'Just remember, the better the lipstick, the less oil it contains,' she adds.
• Opt for moist lipsticks, says Johannesburg makeup artist Ana Pompa. 'They look better than matte lipsticks.'
• Use lip liner for darker lips; it creates a plumper effect, says Pompa. Richardson agrees and adds, 'If you choose to use a liner, apply it on top of the base and powder.' You can use a nude pencil, or one that is a shade lighter than the lipstick you're wearing because you don't want it to be visible.

DARK DON'TS
• Avoid applying gloss over dark lips – the colour will bleed and run over the lip line, says Pompa.
• Stay away from dark eyeliner and eye shadow; you don't want to look like a teen goth. Either the eyes or the lips must be the focus of attention, says Richardson, not both.
• Never use brown lipstick, says Pompa. 'If you think brown is your colour, choose copper instead.' Dark brown drains your skin colour and makes you look aged, she says.

WHEN TO GO DARK
If you're heading out for the night, add a little glitter to your dark lips, says Richardson. In terms of colour, red is always good if you want to appear outgoing and attract attention, she says, but if your party frock is pink, stay clear from red lipstick. Her number one tip: make sure your makeup matches your clothing.

For evening drinks, pink and copper are good as long as they match your clothes, say Richardson and Pompa. 'You can't go wrong with neutral shades.'

Don't use dark lipstick when you're at work, and avoid dark lips at all costs during the day, says Pompa. When it comes to work colours, it's good to keep it neutral, advises Richardson. She recommends using nudes and light pinks.

Wisdom From a Tattoo Artist's Chair http://www.cosmopolitan.co.za//Beauty/Skin/wisdom-from-a-tattoo-artists-chair
'When I was in Scotland doing my apprenticeship, we did all sorts of awkward, funny things, including plenty of genital tattoos,' says Laka. People would just bear it all, she adds. 'The most hilarious tattoo I've ever done though was the word "Bang'" on a dude's pubic area,' she says. And the silliest? 'Braille,' she says. These guys were not blind, she explains, they just thought it made them look cool. Not so much.

If you're thinking of getting inked, these are the questions you shouldn't ask a tattoo artist. Read Laka's answers to the questions she gets asked almost every day:

Q: 'Does it hurt?'
This warrants a sarcastic answer: Uh, no. But of course it hurts. Basically, it's nothing excruciating, it's more of an uncomfortable feeling.

Q: 'Has somebody ever stopped halfway and couldn't handle it?'
Of course they have!

Q: 'Can you numb it for me?'
Heck no…

Q: 'So, you do the ladies?'
Because I'm a woman, people ask questions like this. No, I do dogs, cats, pigs, anything.

Q: 'Do you watch Miami Ink?'
Artists hate being asked that question. Yes, we've seen it. I must say, the programme has helped break down some tough walls and serious opinions when it comes to tattoos. But now we have pessimists getting tattooed and justifying their new ink with the death of a family member, an illness or their religious beliefs. Moms are letting their young kids get tattoos simply because it's a cross or the name of deceased family member.

Q: 'Do you do penises too?'
I tell them yes, but I charge a handling fee. On a serious note, South Africans are very conservative, so since I've been back in the country, I haven't had much of that.

Q: 'How much will a full back tattoo cost?'
This is a silly question. Tattoos vary by design size and intricacy, so giving a quotation based on a question like this is almost impossible. It's best to work on a design first.

Q: 'So, you tattoo? How do you do it?'
When they ask this, they do so by looking at me with such awe and wonder. I begin my education seminar with: A needle and a tattoo machine.

'I've decided to charge for each question,' Ethel laughs. 'All said and done, not all customers ask silly questions.

When you walk into a tattoo parlour, you should feel welcomed. People should be treated with respect and customers shouldn't pay anybody for being rude to them. ]]>

I-Don't-Care Beauty http://www.cosmopolitan.co.za//Beauty/Skin/i-dont-care-beauty
STEP 1
Before you begin, always make sure your face is clean, advises Johannesburg makeup artist and image consultant, Isabel Sutherland. Then use concealer to hide any blemishes or dark shadows. Sutherland recommends Kryolan Ultra Foundation Brush-On Concealer (R294).

STEP 2
Mix a liquid foundation like Metropolitan Cosmetics' Make Up Forever Face and Body (R420 per 50ml), with your daily moisturiser to give your skin a more natural finish, says Johannesburg makeup artist, Ana Pompa. The liquid foundation will even out your skin tone, adds Sutherland. Use a small sponge for application.

STEP 3
Now use translucent powder to set your makeup, advises Sutherland. TRY Kryolan Translucent Powder (R187 per 60g).

STEP 4
'Brush through your eyebrows and fill in any gaps with powder or pencil,' says Sutherland, but be careful not to go too dark. We recommend not going darker than two shades your hair colour.

STEP 5
Apply a natural colour highlighter (Smashbox has a great product for R135) to your entire eyelid. 'Include the inner corners of your eyes, as it opens them and gives you an "awake" look,' says Pompa.

STEP 6
Use a light-coloured and medium-toned eyeshadow and build from the lids to the brow, allowing the colours to blend into each other, advises Sutherland. 'Start with a light colour that almost matches your lid and blend the lighter shade up to the brow bone to highlight. Follow with a soft, neutral colour in the crease of the eye,' she says. Then use a little bit of the darker shade under the outer corner of the eye and blend well.

STEP 7
If you want to make a huge difference to the frame of your eye, says Pompa, use thin eyeliner, such as Studio Make Up Cake in Black (R110), as close to the upper lash line as possible. This way, she says, it doesn't really look like you're wearing eyeliner.
Sutherland suggests smudging the liner a quarter of the way in, but agrees that you should focus on the upper lid only.

STEP 8
'Apply a light coat of mascara to the top lashes only,' advises Sutherland. She suggests trying either black or brown Kryolan Volumising Wand Mascara (R144). Pompa recommends wiping off the excess amount of mascara from the wand before you start.

STEP 9
Apply a minimal amount of liquid or cream blusher to the apples of your cheeks, says Sutherland. TRY Kryolan Micro Liquid Blush (R330 per 15ml).

STEP 10
A light lip gloss, like Studio Make Up Light Lip Gloss in Nectar (R169), will perfect and finish your look, concludes Pompa. ]]>

Inside Out http://www.cosmopolitan.co.za//Beauty/Skin/inside-out COSMOPOLITAN's March issue, we've found five more of the most delicious DIY spa treatments for you to test. Just try and avoid eating the ingredients before you begin applying them.

FACE

Banana and Honey Mask
• 1/2 mashed banana
• 1/4 cup oatmeal, cooked with milk
• 1 egg
• 1/2 tablespoon honey
How: Okay, so covering your face with egg does not sound pleasant, but this mask will leave your skin feeling soft and smooth. After you've mixed the ingredients together, apply to your face using slow, circular motions. Paint your nails or water your indoor plants while you let the mask do its job for 15 minutes. Once the time is up, rinse off with lukewarm water.
Why: This mask is suitable for all skin types, says Sue Dolan from the Skin Resource Centre. Oatmeal cleanses and heals the skin and is packed with nourishing vitamins and minerals, she says. Bananas are high in vitamin A, eggs contain the softening properties of lecithin and honey helps to protect the skin's natural acid layer, explains Dolan.

Strawberry and Buttermilk Facial
• 5 strawberries
• 3 teaspoons honey
• 1/2 cup buttermilk
How: Unlike covering your face with egg, strawberries seem like a much more appealing option. After you've finished pureeing them, add the honey and buttermilk to your mixture. Blend the ingredients together and after applying, leave on your face for 20-30 minutes, according Craftbits.com. Sounds delicious…
Why: Strawberries help prevent oily skin and leave your face glowing and feeling fresh.

HAIR

Avocado Hair Mask

• 1 small ripe avocado
• 1 tablespoon yoghurt
• 1/2 tablespoon honey
How: Mash the avocado and mix with the honey and yoghurt into a creamy paste. Separate your hair into sections to ensure you cover your entire head, advises Priya Chauhan from The Green Diva. 'Leave it on for 30 minutes – preferably with an old shower cap on to maximise penetration by keeping heat in.' After you've carefully rinsed your hair, shampoo and condition as you normally would.
Why: The healthy fats found in avocados can revitalise your hair if it's lacking its natural, glossy shine. And when we say shine, we don't mean grease. Avocado is easy to wash out, says Chauhan. And don't worry about smelling like the green fruit because it doesn't leave an after-scent.

BODY

Pumpkin Body Butter

• 1/2 cup pumpkin puree, preferably organic
• 1/2 cup solids from a can of coconut milk
• 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
How: Blend the ingredients together and, using gentle, circular motions, apply the mixture to your entire body. Make sure you've showered beforehand, as the skin needs to be clean before you begin the process, says Cait Johnson, author of Witch In The Kitchen: Magical Cooking For All Seasons (Inner Traditions Bear & Company). After 10 minutes, rinse your body off with warm water.
Why: This simple skin recipe may sound odd (pumpkins?), but according to Johnson, 'Pumpkin puree has enzymes and antioxidants that offer results similar to gentle alpha-hydroxy action: It removes dead dull cells, while its beta-carotene-rich antioxidants nourish your skin.' As for the coconuts and cinnamon? 'Coconut solids are a lovely, natural moisturiser, and ground cinnamon is stimulating and antibacterial,' says Johnson.

Mango Scrub
• 1 mango
• 1/2 cup sugar
• 1 tablespoon honey
• 2 tablespoons full-cream milk
How: Mix ingredients together until you're left with a smooth, creamy batter. Rub the body butter over your entire body. Wash yourself off with warm water at first, before moving on to a lukewarm rinse-off.
Why: According to Danielle Sims of SelfGrowth.com, a mango scrub will leave your skin feeling soft and super smooth. ]]>

Bright Spark http://www.cosmopolitan.co.za//Beauty/Skin/bright-spark • Do you smoke?
• Do you exercise enough?
• Do you eat healthily?
• Do you drink enough water?
• Do you get enough sleep?
• Do you expose your skin to too much sun?
• Are you using the correct beauty products for your skin type?

Smoking, drinking and too many late nights can leave your skin oxygen-deprived, says beautician Claire Gould, from the Constantia Health and Beauty Clinic. She suggests using a gentle exfoliator everyday, such as the Dermalogica Daily Microfoliant (R695) to keep your skin smooth and bright.

Johns agrees: ‘Exfoliate and get rid of dead skin cells to expose healthier, fresh cells underneath. This will allow for better absorption of products and increase microcirculation, which brings new blood and oxygen to feed the cells.’ Try Dermalogica Skin Prep Scrub (R390).

Carrying around unnecessary stress can also affect skin by aging it prematurely, says Gould. Dermalogica Multivitamin Power Recovery Masque (R560) contains Vitamins A and C which will give your skin the boost it needs.

In terms of your diet, Gould recommends plenty of red berries like cranberries, blueberries and raspberries – the antioxidants fight off free radicals and leave your skin looking brighter. Eating nuts and fish oils (rich in Omega 3) will nourish your skin with the essential oils needed to keep your skin supple, hydrated and wrinkle-free. ‘And as always, drink plenty of water to flush out your system and keep your skin hydrated from the inside. This is your best beauty secret.’

Water isn’t the only way to hydrate your skin, says Johns. Try Dermalogica Skin Hydrating Mask (R480). Investing in a good serum, like Dermafix Vit C Serum (R335) or Environ Hydrating Capsules for dryer skin (R317) will also fight free radicals as well as feed the skin.

If you’ve had a late Puza Thursday and your skin needs a pick-me-up, Johns recommends Smashbox specialised primers, such as Photofinish Clear Foundation Primer (R305) or one of their three Colour Correcting primers (R315 each) for a quick-fix cosmetic finish. ]]>

Skin Deep http://www.cosmopolitan.co.za//Beauty/Skin/skin-deep
‘As a child I was told by a young family friend that I was lucky I was clever because no one would ever want to marry me because of the way I looked.’

Only after numerous surgeries did Fulson's scars (physical and emotional) begin to fade.

‘The scars took a drastic toll on my self-esteem, but it has made me a much stronger adult and I like to think that it has made me a much more compassionate and sensitive human being. Any form of defect has a humbling effect on the soul.’

In Fulson's case, surgery was the most extreme (but necessary) option, but there are other ways to treat scars.

VITAMINS AND CREAMS

While many people use Vitamin E oil to help remove scars, research shows there is little evidence to prove it has any effect at all.

‘Dermastine, an elastine cream normally used to prevent stretch marks, increases the elasticity of the skin and is therefore better for scar treatment,’ recommends dermatologist Dr. Dagmar Whitaker.

According to Whitaker, tissue oils don’t really work because they don’t penetrate the skin deep enough. Plastic and reconstructive surgeon, Dr. Des Fernandes, agrees.

‘Numerous researchers have shown that at best, it does nothing at all. If you want to improve a scar with cream, or to prepare skin before it gets scarred, use topical Vitamins A and C.’

With the guidance of a trained skin care therapist, says Fernandes, you can use prescribed low dose creams and eventually, stronger products to allow the skin to adapt before vitamin A and C penetration.

NEEDLING
‘You can also enhance the penetration of Vitamins A and C by using a special needling device that punctures the superficial layer of the skin, which allows the vitamins to literally fall through into the lower levels where they are needed to improve scars.’

In Fernandes’ opinion, needling is the best way to treat already established scars because it regenerates the scar tissue. Using something like a tattoo gun, the needles break down the collagen that is bound to the scar tissue and in the process creates collagen that smoothes and plumps up the skin.

‘In general, needling has set the gold standard for treating a scar,’ says Fernandes. ‘However, I should point out that needling skin has to be accompanied by daily nourishment of the skin with vitamins A and C.’

‘I don’t think you ever truly get rid of scars,’ Fulson concludes. ‘They might not be as noticeable or visible, but it is something that stays with you for the rest of your life. They stay there because they tell a story and they contribute to the person you are today.

‘I wouldn't be the same person if it weren’t for my scar. So many memories, struggles and human qualities sprang from a place that I had so long tried to conceal... and now I don’t hide. Now I’m grateful.’

Get-Sexy-Now Beauty http://www.cosmopolitan.co.za//Beauty/Skin/get-sexy-now-beauty 1. I Shall Always Blend My Makeup
Foundation should match your skin tone. Apply it in natural light, blend with a brush on the forehead, nose, chin, cheeks, jaw and neck, then dab on concealer and dust with loose powder.

2. I Shall Exfoliate
Exfoliation gets rid of dead cells and oils that can block pores. For a luminous glow, exfoliate dry skin two to three times a week, normal skin once or twice a week, combination skin once a week and oily skin every seven to 10 days.

3. I Shall Wear Concealer
Concealer is a bit like a G-string: it should never be seen. Using fingers, dab concealer under eyes and over red areas. If it’s too dark or light, it will draw attention to the area you’re covering.

4. I Shall Moisturise My Body Daily
For skin that’s beyond soft, always slather lotion on after stepping out of the shower. Top up moisture levels by taking flaxseed, linseed or cod-liver oil daily.

5. I Shall Not Wear Chipped Nail Polish
Like a guy with his shirt half hanging out of his trousers, chipped nail polish is a total turn-off. But don’t just peel off the rest – you could remove the top layers of the nail bed, too. Remove polish immediately after the first chip using quick nail-polish remover wipes. Rehydrate cuticles by massaging in cuticle oil.

6. I Shall Leave My Spots Alone
Squeezing can push bacteria deeper into the skin and spread infection, so the only way to touch your spots is with a zit-zapping solution. Choose a quick-heal salicylic acid or one with antibacterial properties, like tea tree oil and rosemary.

7. I Shall Protect Against Wrinkles
Use a moisturiser all year round that protects against UV rays. UVA can cause long-term skin damage and premature ageing.

8. I Shall Not Skip Conditioner
Conditioner eliminates tangles, smoothes hair cuticles and adds shine. Avoiding the roots, comb through to the ends with a wide-tooth comb and wait a few minutes before rinsing.

9. I Shall Moisturise Every Night
When you sleep, your skin repairs any daytime damage. Use a night moisturiser, as it tends to have a higher concentration of ingredients than a day cream to boost cell renewal and replace lost moisture.

10. I Shall Stop Only Using Water To Cleanse My Face
According to beauty company St Ives, 54% of women never use cleanser, yet it’s essential to remove oil and makeup. Cream cleansers are great for all skin types, but rinsing with too-hot water can strip the skin of natural oils, giving you a dry complexion. ]]>

Easy On, Easy Off http://www.cosmopolitan.co.za//Beauty/Skin/easy-on-easy-off
EYES
‘Gently remove your makeup with a damp cotton disk soaked with eye makeup remover,’ says Sutherland. TRY Kryolan Dual-Phase Eye Makeup Remover (R209). Use a repetitive downward motion, from your brow to your cheek, and across the eye from the inner to the outer corner, until all traces of mascara have been removed. ‘Trace an ear bud along the ridge of the eye to remove any traces of eyeliner.’

If you find residue underneath your eye, Pompa says remove it with an ear bud soaked in eye makeup remover. TRY Uriage Eau Thermale Hypo-Allergenic Eyes & Face Makeup Remover Water (R125.95). ‘If your mascara is waterproof, it’s trickier to remove,’ Pompa continues. ‘Use a tiny bit of baby oil and cotton wool; it’s more effective than normal makeup remover.’

LIPS
Apply a small amount of cleanser on a damp cotton disk and using small, circular motions, remove lipstick, says Sutherland. ‘For those stubborn, or darker colours, a little makeup remover can be used.’ TRY Matis Paris Youth Response Biphase Eyes & Lips Makeup Remover (R233 per 125ml).

FACE
When getting rid of makeup on your face, begin by rinsing with warm water to loosen dirty and open clogged pores, says Sutherland. ‘The key is to let the warm water and cleanser dissolve as much of the makeup as possible before you start removing it.’

Apply dots of cleanser suitable to your skin type over the entire area (avoiding your eyes). TRY Placécol Soothing Cleanser for Dry/Sensitive Skin (R125), or Placécol Cleansing Emulsion for Normal/Combination skin. ‘Massage the cleanser into your skin, starting under the throat, using a gentle, upward motion; and continue up to the forehead, using your fingertips.

‘Gently massage over the bridge of your nose onto the forehead, working out towards the temple area,’ says Sutherland. Use your index finger to massage cleanser over your chin; this area is particularly prone to blackheads and breakouts. Allow the cleanser to penetrate the skin for two or three minutes before removing cleanser (the same way you put it on), with tissue pads, a damp cotton disk or a sponge, says Sutherland.

If you’re in a hurry and can’t follow the full routine, says Pompa, you can use facial wipes. TRY TLC Facial & Eye Daily Cleansing Make-Up Remover Wipes, R39.99 for a pack of 60. ‘It’s always recommended to wash the face afterwards, as using a facial wipe won’t remove all of your makeup, only most of it.’ ]]>

5-Minute Masterclass http://www.cosmopolitan.co.za//Beauty/Skin/5-minute-masterclass 1. KIMORA
SKIN: Apply a sheer dewy foundation, like Chanel Vitalumière (R450), and a shimmery highlighting powder or cream in a shade of gold to enhance the cheekbones and the outsides of the face, as well as on the bridge of the nose. You can also use a bronzing powder, TRY the Body Shop Native Mineral Bronzer (R160) or M.A.C. Delightful iridescent powder (R200).
CHEEKS: Use a peach-based colour on the apple of your cheeks. Bobbi Brown has an amazing range of colours to choose from; TRY their range of blush (R310) or Bobbi Brown Pot Rouge cheek and lip colour (R275).
EYES: Blend a shimmery blue eye shadow all over the lid, as well as underneath it. Then, apply a bronze/gold shimmery shadow in the crease, and blend into the brow. To add a little more drama, use a small amount of black eye pencil inside the eye. Before you add a few layers of mascara, be sure to use a lash curler to create maximum effect.
LIPS: Keep it simple to balance out the dramatic eyes using a nude pencil. TRY Subculture by M.A.C. (R135), or for a bronzy-peach lip-gloss M.A.C. Fulfilled (R155) or Oh Baby (R135).

2. MEGAN
SKIN: Use a slightly more powdery-finish foundation. TRY M.A.C.'s Studiofix Powder 2-in-1 (R240).
CHEEKS: Apply a pink-based, sheer cream blush.
EYES: Use a black liner underneath and on the lid and smudge until it's fully blended. Add your charcoal-coloured eye shadow, using it more intensely closer to the lash line and blend into the eye crease. Use a lighter colour shadow on the brow bone and blend. Eye colour lasts longer if you layer it, so use liner underneath the lid. Use volumising black mascara, TRY Kanebo 38 Degrees (R320), smoothing on two or three applications.
LIPS: There are two options: either apply a berry-coloured lip pencil all over the lips and follow on with lip colour, or, for longer lasting lips, opt for a lip stain. Benefit has a great lip and cheek stain called Benetint (R315).

3. TAYLOR
SKIN: Apply a sheer foundation, TRY Mineralise satin finish by M.A.C. (R260). Use a cream-based highlighter on the cheekbone and blend into the brow bone.
CHEEKS: Apply a pale, peach/pink powder blush on the apple of the cheeks.
EYES: Use a dark brown pencil along the lash line of the lid and smudge it towards the outer corner of the eyes to create an almond shape. Be sure to blend! Cover the lid with a gold or cream shadow, and blend it into the fold of the lid. Add a sparkly gold eye shadow underneath the lid and blend with an ear bud or fine-angled brush. Complete the look with loads of dark brown mascara.
LIPS: Use a sheer nude gloss. Clarins lip-glosses have great nude colours and lovely flavours.

The Burning Question http://www.cosmopolitan.co.za//Beauty/Skin/the-burning-question
Q: I have an oily skin that tends to shine during the day, so I always use products that have a mattifying effect. I've noticed though that when I apply sunscreen the oily shine gets even worse, hence I avoid all SPF products. Are there any mattifying skin care ranges with a high SPF that I can use?

A: There are two forms of protection when it comes to sunscreen. There is the chemical sunscreen, which is absorbed by the skin, and the physical sunscreen, which sits on the surface of the skin and acts like a reflective barrier to protect the skin from the damaging effects of UV rays.

The physical sunscreen, which contains titanium dioxide and zinc oxide, is generally more popular, as it is the least irritating on the skin, and helps to prevent against burning if you have sensitive skin. People who have an oily skin often prefer the chemical sunscreen, as it is generally not as thick. However, if your skin is sensitive or scarred, you must exercise caution, as a chemical sunscreen can make the skin more sensitive and more prone to pigmentation.

The key ingredients to avoid if one is prone to oiliness or acne are: mineral oil, petroleum derivatives, liquidum paraffinum, paraffin oil, paraffin wax and petrolatum. The emulsifiers used to mix the active ingredients together are often the main cause of breakouts.

I would suggest using a brand like the Pevonia Botanica Hydrating Sunscreen SPF30. It is an organic product that has the best of both worlds with a chemical block and physical block as well as natural soothing, repairing and calming ingredients like green tea, aloe gel and French rose. It has a silky smooth, non-greasy texture with proven results.

Q: Are there any good fragrance-free sunscreen lotions for people with very sensitive skin? I have found it very difficult to find one because all the ones with fragrances give me a rash.

A: To avoid sensitivity, make sure you are using a physical sunscreen as opposed to a chemical one, and use a natural sunscreen that doesn't have any unnecessary artificial fragrances, colourants, preservatives or alcohol. There are some fantastic products on the market that apply to sensitive skin. Get advice from your dermatologist as to which sunscreen is best suited to your skin.

Q: How often should you re-apply sunscreen and what is the best way to re-apply it?

A: Always apply a generous, even amount of sunscreen 20 to 30 minutes prior to any sun exposure. Re-apply the same amount a minimum of every two hours and again after any swimming or excessive sweating. Remember to wear a hat and sunglasses and to apply sunscreen under your clothes.

Q: How waterproof is waterproof sunscreen? Is it OK not to re-apply sunscreen after coming out of the water if you've used waterproof sunscreen?

A: You do need to re-apply your waterproof sunscreen after being in the water. Waterproof sunscreen maintains its indicated level of SPF up to only 80 minutes after exposure to water. In comparison, water resistant sunscreen maintains its indicated level of SPF up to 40 minutes after exposure to water.

Q: What is SPF?

A: SPF stands for Sun Protection Factor, which indicates how long you are able to stay in the sun without burning, opposed to being in the sun without any sunscreen. For example, SPF 30 indicates you are able to stay in the sun 30 times longer than normal, before you start to burn.

Q: How much sunscreen should you apply for the SPF to be effective?

A: For sunscreen to be effective it needs to be applied generously, evenly and regularly. If you are unsure, always apply more, rather than less.

Q: What works better for when you're burnt? After-sun or aloe vera?

A: Aloe Vera is a fantastic natural product that has cooling and hydrating properties on the skin, which will assist with sunburn. However, rather use a professional after-sun product such as the Pevonia Botanica After Sun Soothing Gel. It has a number of natural active ingredients – opposed to just the one – to cool, heal, soothe, moisturise and assist with redness, reducing the sunburn and assisting with healing at a faster rate. ]]>

A Smash Hit http://www.cosmopolitan.co.za//Beauty/Skin/a-smash-hit
Chavez helps us recreate the red carpet looks for Angelina Jolie and Amy Adams at this year's Academy Awards. Although Chavez did not create the original looks, here's his advice on how to get them:

ANGELINA JOLIE AMY ADAMS

[AFP]

'Angie has the look of perfect skin, defined eye brows, flawless liner and lashes,' says Chavez. 'A glowing natural bronze cheek and an almost nude lip will recreate this diva's red carpet look.'

Step 1:
Chavez says Smashbox Photo Finish Foundation Primer (from R295) is a great product if you want young-looking, smooth, soft skin. 'Photo Finish is the perfect base I use to fill in the large pores and fine lines while softening the skin for a smoother foundation application. Plus it extends the wear of the makeup.'

Step 2:
Chavez mixes 1 pump of HD Foundation and 1 pump of GLOW Artificial Light to give you just the right amount of coverage and glow.

Step 3:
'Set the makeup using Halo Hydrating Perfecting Mineral Powder (R590). This powder has a soft glow finish and is perfect for the "Angie woman" who loves to use all natural products. Plus this product is infused with hydrogel that provides constant moisture to the skin. Celebs like Angie know that hydrated skin is young skin.'

The Eyes:
'Create a strong frame for your eyes by slightly over defining your brows. This application feels a tad dramatic at first, but it is really the base,' says Chavez. 'I simply applied the strong brow and extended the brow by ¼ inch. Extending the brow is the perfect way to add instant drama to the eye. Now apply a nude (no shimmer) shadow all over the eye as a base from lash to brow followed by the single shadow in a Honey colour into the crease of the eye. Honey is a really soft yellow/gold that will gently define without using dark shadows.' Next, use a waterproof liner and 'apply it perfectly from the inner corner to the outer corner of the eye and extend in a subtle "winged" effect. Follow with a beautiful coat of mascara.'

The Cheeks and Lips:
'Using a bronzer in place of blush adds the prefect contour to the cheeks, but without adding colour to the look,' says Chavez. 'Then to get the "celebrity glow" I add a bit of a baked bronzer called Starburst Bronzer for the soft luminescent glow you see on the apples of the cheek. Don't add a highlighter to the top of the cheekbones; apply the highlight to the apples of the cheeks instead. 'Finish the look with a soft peachy nude lipstick and a clear gloss. The lipstick delivers the long lasting colour and the gloss provides the amazing shine.'
[AFP]

Amy's red carpet glamour is more traditional, with a soft glow, a copper and bronze smoky eye and 'a fresh pop of colour on the cheeks and a super sexy lip colour'.

Step 1:
'The first step on a "fair" complexion like Amy's is to remove any natural high colour from the face. For this, I used Smashbox Colour Correcting Primer Adjust (from R295). This product is a green colour corrector to eliminate the natural redness that most fair skin ladies deal with everyday.'

Step 2:
Then use a full coverage foundation like Camera Ready that's undetectable to the naked eye. 'Following the foundation application, I used the Halo Hydrating Powder to set the makeup and add an instant "soft glow".'

Step 3:
'Make sure to use the correct brow colour! For recreating the Amy Adams look, I used a brow colour called Auburn. This is a naturally red based brow colour to match the red in Amy's hair. A celebrity will always match her hair colour identically for the prefect frame to the eyes. '

The Eyes:
Use a set of smoky colours in copper and bronze tones 'to add a softer dimension to the "traditional" smoky look,' says Chavez. 'First I began with a Midnight Brown Eye Liner along the lash line. I followed the eye lining by smudging a deep dark bronze shadow over the top of the eye liner. By smudging the liner you instantly create the Hollywood smoky eye. Now apply your soft copper to the eye lid and a golden highlight colour under the brow bone for the instant lift to the eye. Finish the look by smudging more of the liner and dark bronze shadow underneath the eye. And remember, smudge the entire length of the under eye area.'

The Cheeks and Lips:
Chavez finished the look with a soft peach or apricot coloured blush to the apples of the cheeks and hairline. 'The lip is a beautiful and bright cherry colour. This is an amazing addition to the copper and bronze smoky eye. I used a mixture of lipstick and gloss from Smashbox's Legendary Lipstick and Spark Gloss. This will add sophistication to any and all evening looks.'

Base Hunter http://www.cosmopolitan.co.za//Beauty/Skin/base-hunter THE LIGHT STUFF
Foundations have come a very long way since cakey pan sticks – thank goodness! When choosing one for your skin, look for the very lightest of the veil-light new formulas that you can get away with, advises US makeup guru Bobbi Brown. 'The more coverage you pile on, the older you look – so never overdo it.' On the other hand, patchy skin also makes you look older, so don't choose a base so light it doesn't even out blotchiness!

THE COLOUR PERFECT

Getting the colour right is as important as getting the texture right. lf it matches your skin exactly – as it should – it will never look mask-like and you will be able to choose whether to apply it all over or only where it's needed. Brown suggests selecting the three colours that seem closest to your skin tone. Apply them to your jaw (where your skin is lightest and most even) in three small stripes. Now take a good look at them in daylight. lf that means asking for a mirror and stepping outside the store, so be it!
The colour that's 'disappeared' into your skin is the right one for you. All brands, from mass to prestige, have an array of shades to choose from – and they will often have samples, so ask for these if you don't want to be shopping with stripes all over your face!
For darker skins, try Maybelline's Dream Matte Mousse Foundation (R139.95) and Dream Satin Liquid Foundation (R144.95) in Caramel or Cocoa, or Iman Second to None Cream to Powder Foundation (R325).

MATCHMAKING
Don't assume that all compact foundations offer matt coverage or that all liquid foundations are sheer and hydrating – sometimes it's the other way around. Rather choose according to what the label says. Dry skin needs moisturising formulas; greasy skin needs oil-free ones; normal skin can wear any formula; and ageing skin has an ever-growing choice of plumping
and line-defying foundations to play with. Sensitive skin will benefit from the nourishing properties found in mineral foundation.

UNDER COVER
Don't rely on base to cover all imperfections. It should only be expected to mask redness and blotches. Hiding blemishes, veins, freckles and scars is a concealer's job. Brown suggests you always dab on undereye concealer (before applying base) because 'it can brighten and lift the whole face'.

THE REAL THING
The better the condition of your skin, the more sheer the base you can use. 'Make your skin look its best before putting on foundation and you won't need half as much coverage,' says Brown. 'Exfoliate regularly and moisturise five minutes before applying your base to leave skin naturally glowing and plump.'

TOP TIP
Never opt for a darker foundation shade to feign a tan. Instead, use bronzer – applying it only where the sun would naturally fall on your face. Contrasting light and dark areas look more natural.

Primer Mineral foundation Liquid foundation
Too many of us skip this step when applying makeup, but primer ensures your base will look even and flawless. TRY: Benefit 'That Gal' Brightening Face Primer (R295); Esteé Lauder Face Primer Smoothing Matte Base (R225); Smashbox Photo Finish UVA/UVB SPF15 (R310) It's the latest craze in foundation. When you see how mineral base makes your skin glow, you'll understand why. TRY: M.A.C Mineralize SPF15 Foundation/Loose (R230); Maybelline Mineral Powder Natural Reflecting Powder Foundation (R155) Liquid foundation is effective and simple to apply. Mix it with a little bronzer if you want to look as though you've had some sun. TRY: Revlon Age Defying Spa Foundation SPF 18 (R195); Diorskin Nude Natural Glow Fresh Powder Makeup SPF10 (R590); L'Oréal Paris Infallible Make-Up (R155)
Stick/compact Tinted moisturiser Concealer
A good stick or compact that suits your skin type and tone will give the best coverage for a flawless-looking complexion. TRY: Bobbi Brown Foundation Stick (R300) This is the lightest 'veil' for skin. It's a great option for summer days – also because most brands have an SPF. TRY: La Mer The SPF18 Fluid Tint (R750); Chanel Précision Hydramax + Active Teinté (R560) It's the COSMO word for 'saviour'! Dab it on any blemishes and blend it in. TRY: Benefit Powderflage Light Diffusing Powder Concealer (R350); Clinique Airbrush Concealer (R185); L'Oréal Paris Infallible Concealer (R120)

Colour Me Summer http://www.cosmopolitan.co.za//Beauty/Skin/colour-me-summer

 DAY NIGHT
Eyes This summer add a little shimmer to your look with muted golds, shimmering bronzes and warm sandy hues. The other colours of the season are blue and green. 'The brighter the better,' say makeup artists Simone, Christa and Raine from U B .beautiful. 'The trick is to find the shade that suits you.' They recommend MAC's blue and aqua shades (R145). Glam up your look with metallic colours. Add silvers, smoky greys and purples to your 'night on the town’ look. U B .beautiful recommends Smash Box Obsidian (R155) for a shimmery charcoal colour and Benefit Punk Royalty (R220) for a purple shimmer.
Cheeks Coral and pink shades will give your skin a gentle, satin blush. After spending the day in the sun add a pink or peach shade to your cheeks to stimulate a warm, natural flush. 'Blusher is another must do this season and we've returned to the 80's application of a straight brush high on the cheekbone all the way to the temple,' says U B .beautiful.
Skin By now you should've picked up that natural is best – so use a matt bronzer to eliminate shine. U B .beautiful suggests the Body Shop's Shimmer Waves Bronze (R160). U B .beautiful love Bobby Brown Shimmer Brick (R475) as a highlighter, 'and then add the Bobby Brown Illuminating Bronzer (R305) on top or use as contouring'.
Lips Accentuate your lips with a pink or orange lipstick. When it comes to lip gloss, juicy coloured coral tones are the trend – either go for a gloss the same colour as your natural lip colour or a shade or two darker. Try Mac Tinted Moisturizer in Gently Coral (R135). Eighties retro luscious red lips are big. U B .beautiful suggests Lancôme Coral Red, Absolute Rouge (R150). 'If you're not a lipstick girl try Body Shop's Liquid Lip Colour in raspberry (R95).'
Nails Showcase your nails this summer with electric pinks, which date back to the 80's. Rich pinkish-purple shades and crisp pastels can complement your tan. Try MAC Steamy (R100) or MAC For Fun (R100). Bold, blue nail polish is the new trend this summer. If a deep, vibrant, navy blue is too dark for you try a tropical blue. U B .beautiful recommends Chanel Blue Satin (R260). Another summer alternative is silver, gold and bronze metallic shades, which are considered neutrals and match any outfit. Try MAC Style Black (R100) or MAC Peaceable (R100).

Seasons Change http://www.cosmopolitan.co.za//Beauty/Skin/seasons-change
'The skin is exposed to different weather conditions during the different seasons,' says Nadia Nacerodien, a beautician from Pure Lotus. 'During the winter months the skin can become very dry because we tend to spend more time indoors. Heaters, wall heating panels and even air conditioners reduce the moisture content levels in the air, which adds to the decreased moisture levels in our skin. In summer our skin is exposed to excessive heat causing our bodies to produce more sebum which often results in oilier, thicker skin necessitating a change to our skin care routine.'

SKIN SENSE
Here are some things you can do to lighten up your summer beauty routine:

Brighten Up
• Brighten up your skin for the summer season. 'Incorporate either a brightening cleanser or an active cleanser into your morning and night routine which is more suited for oilier, dull and pigmented skins, says Nacerodien (TRY: DermaFix Brightening Cleanser, R245 for 200ml or DermaFix Active Cleanser, R245 for 200ml)

Use a lighter moisturiser
• Change to a lighter moisturiser, one containing a sebum inhibitor would be ideal and use it in the morning and at night (TRY: Vichy New Look Active Moisturiser, R325 for 50ml).

Repair your skin
• If the skin's condition has been compromised and you find that it's dry or damaged, it's recommended that a repair cream be used as well (TRY: Dermal Repair Cream, R380 for 60ml). 'This will restore the skin's barrier,' says Nacerodien.

Exfoliate
• Exfoliate more often, between three to four times a week, to accelerate cell renewal – remember more sebum is produced in summer, which could block your pores (TRY: Dermalogica Microfoliant, R695 for 75g).

Sun Protection
• Most important: use a sun block with a universal ingredient like micronised zinc oxide. Use something with a high SPF to protect the skin from the harmful rays of the sun (TRY: DermaFix Dermashield SPF 45, R220 for 125ml or R110 for 50ml).

MAKEOVER YOUR MAKEUP BAG

Ditch the heavies
Throw out heavy foundations and dark eyeliner and go for a lighter, fresher look. 'Changing the make-up colours that you wear to more vibrant colours really does welcome summer in,' says Dale Titus, a local makeup artist. 'Juicy coloured lip gloss and cheek colours leaning more to the coral tones can really make you face look fresh.'

Mineralize your skin
For summer, fresh glowing skin is always recommended. This season, mineral rich makeup is the way to go because it allows the skin to breathe and doesn't clog your pores, says Titus. It also evens your skin tone and mattes areas that tend to get oily, especially when temperatures start to rise. TRY: Mac Mineralize, R260 for 30ml, or Maybelline Mineral Powder Foundation (R165).

Invest in a good Primer
Titus says a good primer allows your makeup to last longer and prevents it from literally sliding down your face when the temperatures rise. Eye makeup is usually the first to succumb to the heat. TRY: Mac Eye Primer (R225 for 30ml).

Spritz with a refresher spray
'Bring a day's worth of dull makeup back to life with a refresher spray. It can be as simple as rosewater purchased from a health store in a spritz bottle or canister of compressed water says Titus. TRY: Mac Skin Freshener with cucumber extract (R160 for 100ml). You can also spritz it on periodically to stay cool, and can either be used before or after you apply makeup.

Use a great bronzer
Some of us tend not to tan our faces. Make the colour transition between face and chest less shocking with a gentle dust of bronzer. TRY: Rimmel Shimmer Maxi Bronzer (R109.95).

Eliminate shine
Sometimes sun block makes us look shinier than we'd like. An anti-shiner controls the gleam with almost industrial strength and is easy to apply. TRY: Smashbox Compact Anti Shiner (R225).

Tips From a Beauty Queen http://www.cosmopolitan.co.za//Beauty/Skin/tips-from-a-beauty-queen Jo-Ann Strauss' face went from unknown to instantly recognizable at the turn of the millennium. But this former beauty queen isn't just pretty face, she's an accomplished business woman with a B.Comm Law degree and is currently studying towards her MBA.

As the new face and ambassador for Lux (following in the footsteps of beauties such as Marilyn Monroe, Catherine Zeta-Jones and Aishwarya Rai), the Top Billing presenter knows what makes and breaks a flawless face. We sat down with Jo-Ann and squeezed her beauty secrets out of her.

When it comes to her skin, Jo-Ann says it's all in her genes. 'I'm very lucky. I think I've got to thank my mom for good genes because she's got phenomenal skin!' Recounting an experience from a photo shoot she did with her mother, Jo-Ann laughs explaining how amazed the photographer was when he was setting up the lights and realized her 50-odd-year-old mother didn't have any wrinkles.

'I think it was Oprah who said "Black don't crack",' she quips. 'My mom hardly wears makeup. She cleanses and tones and moisturises and all that stuff, so she's always tried to make me do it, but it hasn't quite rubbed off yet.'

The TV presenter confesses to using 'a little bit of this and a little bit of that' but swears by Oil of Olay, a brand she's been using for years. This may all soon change with her recent signing to the Lux campaign (the brand also happened to be her sponsor during her Miss SA reign), but she's beginning to get hooked on Environ's facial products.

She does, however, use a face wash she imports from Europe called Avene. 'I never used to use face wash, I always just used whatever was lying around. But my boyfriend got me started on it and now I use Avene,' she says. 'If [beauty products] cost more than R500 for a tub of something, then my skin breaks out. I've got nice, low-cost skin!'

When she's out-and-about on the road, Jo-Ann protects her skin with Avene's SPF 40 moisturiser - particularly necessary as she drives the stylish new Peugeot 308CC cabriolet and puts the top down every opportunity she gets.

In terms of makeup, Jo-Ann can't get enough of M.A.C. She recalls not knowing a thing about makeup until her Miss SA year, when as a 19-year-old she was given a crash course in applying makeup and developing a look that suited her skin tone and bone structure.

'I struggled at first. I look back to my Matric ball pictures and think "Sherbert! Somebody should've told me!" It looks like my face belongs to a different body!'

Jo-Ann loves M.A.C. because of the brand's different pigments and colours. She admits she's had to play around with the ranges, but when she found the colour that suited her yellow undertones she knew she'd struck gold. She highly recommends taking your time when choosing makeup and asking beauticians at cosmetics counters for their advice – that's what they're there for.

'It's great to look at magazines and gather tips from there, but you've got to get your basics down and then you can start experimenting,' she says. 'Also, if you can get good brushes you'll be sorted. I still have mine from Miss SA, nine years later!'

As one of South Africa's top MCs, Jo-Ann says it's good to know what works for you, especially if you find yourself working with a makeup artist who doesn't know your skin and what you're comfortable with. 'I love my dark eye and nudeish mouth. I know what I like and what works.'

As a child, Jo-Ann suffered a horrific burn when boiling water accidentally fell down her chest. She almost needed skin grafts, but due to her mom's quick thinking, Vaseline and Friar's Balsam 'or one of those other old wives' tale ointments' all she has now are freckles. But in terms of old wives' tales, the only one Jo-Ann doesn't believe is that chocolate causes pimples. 'But I think that was just my mom trying to get me to lay off the chocolate,' she laughs.

Asked about tips for COSMO girls Jo-Ann says, 'When it comes to your 20s, you know that whole thing that prevention is better than cure? That's so true.' She's started noticing fine laugh-lines in the corners of her eyes and has begun using an eye gel. 'They're not really there yet, but I've started taking preventative steps.'

Another tip is to moisturise and drink water. 'I put on so much moisturiser before I go to bed. And also drink lots of water,' she says. 'As silly as it sounds and I know everyone's saying "drinks lots of water", but you'll actually start noticing a real difference in your skin. You have to keep yourself hydrated both inside and out.'

Jo-Ann is also a firm believer in giving your skin a break from time to time. Constantly under bright lights on the SABC 3 show Top Billing, she's sometimes forced to keep the set makeup on longer than she'd like. 'Sometimes we're running straight from a shoot in Paris and we've got to catch a connecting flight and you're in and out of aircon and then heating. It's not good to fly with a full face of makeup but sometimes we have to because we're rushing around.'

On her days off, she doesn't touch her makeup bag. 'On Saturdays or whenever I'm not working, I sort of roll out of bed, put on my boyfriend's jeans and his track top, a big cap and no makeup.'

Winter-Proof Your Skin http://www.cosmopolitan.co.za//Beauty/Skin/winter-proof-your-skin
DON'T STRIP OFF
'In winter the air contains 30% less moisture than in summer, so take special measures to protect your skin from drying out. Hot water and soap remove natural oils, so have lukewarm showers and avoid products that create foam: they're full of moisture-stripping detergents.' Switch to a gentle body wash (even better if it doesn't contain sodium lauryl or sodium laureth sulphate) and treat yourself to a bath oil.

SAVE FACE
'Be extra kind to your face; don't rub it dry – pat it instead to avoid irritating it. Try a creamy, tissue-off cleanser instead of a wash-off one (even water can be drying on dehydrated skin), and follow with a powerful moisturiser that has ingredients like glycerine, hyaluronic acid and ceramides, to draw water into the skin and rebuild its lipid barrier.'

DITCH THE SCALES
'Body skin needn't be slathered in greasy creams, but do look for rich emollient ingredients like urea and shea butter in your chosen body lotion to keep scaly skin a bay.' Because cell turnover slows down during winter, it's wise to use a gentle body exfoliant (and separate face scrub) once a week to remove dead skin and help moisturisers penetrate – but skip this step if your skin is red or sore.

SORE-SPOT RELIEF
'Exposed areas like lips and hands especially suffer from icy winds, while patches of skin can get irritated by moisture-sapping woolly garments and Sahara-like conditions indoors. Keep these areas covered using rich skin balms with ingredients such as petrolatum and lanolin, and use a hand and nail cream religiously.' ]]>

Draw the Line http://www.cosmopolitan.co.za//Beauty/Skin/draw-the-line
Professional makeup artist, Renee de Wit, has worked on celebrities ranging from Sophie Dahl to Steffi Graf and assisted on stars such as Beyoncé and U2. We found out from her how to perfect the tricky art of applying liquid liner.

• Apply your eye shadow first to prevent any possible smudging at a later stage. Unfortunately, de Wit warns, 'the only problem is that if you make a mistake with your liner you might have to wipe some of your eye shadow off. Use a good foundation, preferably powder based, to really prevent the liner from bleeding or smudging as your day progresses.'

• Shake the liquid liner before you start, as the last thing you want are clumps. 'Another good trick is to wipe the applicator on a tissue before you begin the application.'

• Rest your elbow on your desk or countertop to ensure your hands remain steady. 'No one has that steady a hand, so this is a must! It’s also good to make sure you have ample light.'

• Pull your eyelid taut and start a quarter of the way from the inner corner of your eye. 'Make sure you start with the smallest possible line to avoid that 60s look,' de Wit advises. 'Use a pointed cotton bud to blend the line towards the inside corner of the eye so it looks more natural.'

• Draw a line to the outer corner of your eye, making sure to keep close to your upper lash-line. Never apply liquid liner to your lower lash-line. 'Lower lash liner looks dated unless you really smudge it,' de Wit warns. 'If you just have to have liner on the bottom, reach for eye shadow and use an angle brush or cotton bud to blend.'

• Keep the line as thin as possible. You can always make it thicker as you go along. 'The thicker you go, the less natural it will look. To make sure you keep the line thin, simply dot along the lash and then join the dots, remembering to always pull the lid taut and look slightly downwards.'

• To prevent the droopy-eye look, when you reach the outer corner of your eye, draw the line in an upward motion, creating a slight wing. Don’t make too much of a wing, unless you want to look like Amy Winehouse. 'To make sure the wing stays nice and thin, use a moistened cotton bud to sweep it at the end.'

• If you make a mistake, simply use an ear bud and a little makeup remover to remove any mishaps. 'Make sure it’s oil free though,' advises Renee.

The New Botox http://www.cosmopolitan.co.za//Beauty/Skin/the-new-botox
Seven years and billions of dollars in profits later, Botox bosses might have something to be concerned about. Reloxin. Currently awaiting Food and Administration (FDA) approval in the United States, the treatment is already up and running in more than 60 countries under the name Dysport.

FASTER FOR LONGER

Reloxin contains Botlulinum Toxin A, the same key ingredient found in Botox. As with Botox, Reloxin temporarily paralyses the facial muscles to smooth out any unwanted wrinkles. But a number of studies have shown Reloxin to work faster as well as last longer than Botox.

According to Dr. Nancy Snyderman, NBC’s Chief Medical Editor, 'Reloxin will act in one to two days instead of the three to five days Botox needs to kick in. Clinical trials suggest injections may be effective for up to five or six months as opposed to about three months for Botox.'

Research does, however, seem to differentiate from study to study, with some trial patients only seeing results after seven days and others experiencing post-injection results as long-lasting as 13 months.

EFFECTS ON THE SIDE

The side effects experienced following Reloxin treatment are similar to those experienced after Botox injections. According to one of the latest studies, published in the March/April edition of Archives of Facial Plastic Surgery, users may experience headaches and drooping eyelids or eyebrows. But when compared to the adverse effects of Botox there’s really not much difference between the two treatments, if anything, Botox appears to have more, including nausea and facial pain.

This could be one of the main reasons women are so eager to try the 'new Botox'.

According to Chicago-based plastic surgeon, Dr. Otto Joseph Placik, one must be wary that Reloxin 'spreads'. He refers to a recent study in which it was demonstrated how Reloxin spreads further than Botox: 'This is both an advantage and disadvantage. In large muscles such as the forehead, you want the toxin to spread whereas in small muscles [such as around the eyes] you do not want it to spread because it could affect neighbouring muscles unfavourably.'

Unless administered properly around the eye area, Reloxin could lead to that dreaded droopiness. But it looks as though the larger the area you have treated, the less you have to worry about the possible, negative side effects.

BIG SPENDER?

Given the current global economic recession, we've all become aware of what things cost and what they're worth. Reloxin is said to be one-third cheaper than Botox – so if one Botox treatment costs between R800 and R2 000, a move to Reloxin could save you between R250 and R650 respectively.

Botox has held the monopoly in facial aesthetics for six years leaving no room for healthy competition, but now the more economical Reloxin may force the makers of Botox to lower their prices to compete.

Although Reloxin (or Dysport) has been used successfully by women across the world for years, whether it’s considered to be a better or worse product is yet to be seen. If the FDA approves the use of Reloxin in the United States, it might completely revolutionise the cosmetic treatment market as we know it.

Catching Up http://www.cosmopolitan.co.za//Beauty/Skin/catching-up We used our long-distance minutes to find out what the striking ladies are doing these days and which beauty products they can't live without.

They travelled from Nigeria, Namibia and Ghana to strike a pose in Stone Town, Zanzibar for our fashion shoot. Recently we caught up with the three ladies to dig in their makeup bag and their lives.

OLUSOLA
The Nigerian-born beauty has since the show gone back to school to complete her studies and is hoping to return to South Africa shortly to take part in a few Fashion Weeks. 'Hopefully I'll come down by the middle of March,' she says.

Although she doesn't usually wear much makeup, Sola always carries around her trusty lip gloss. 'I also absolutely can't live without my sunglasses and wrist watch.'

MARIA
Maria is currently back in Namibia attaining her commercial pilot's license. 'I only have a few more hours left, but I will be back in South Africa for the Autumn/Winter season,' she says. 'But I have to get my license first. It's so much easier to do other things in life once you have an official qualification.'

Maria confesses to being a M.A.C girl. 'I can't live without my M.A.C facial wash and eyeliner. I also use the SPF15 moisturiser.'

KATE
Since winning M-Net's model search competition and becoming the Face of Africa for 2008, Kate has been booked on back-to-back shoots. In December she flew to Mozambique to appear in Fashion Week shows there and in January hit the Audi/Joburg Fashion Week runways. 'My most exciting booking yet was the amazing African designers show at New York fashion week, called Arise This Day,' she says. 'People are beginning to recognise me when I walk down the street, which is a weird but wonderful feeling.'

Kate is also eyeing international runways and plans to make a name for herself in New York, Paris and/or London. 'After I have accomplished that I hope to settle down with a good, gorgeous man, get married and even have kids.'

She carries her essential cosmetics like eye makeup and hand cream in her handbag as well as her diary, Sony PSP and sometimes even shoes and DVDs. But it's her eyebrow pencil, tweezers, mascara, moisturiser, lip gloss and cleanser that she can't live without.

Sexy Body Strategies http://www.cosmopolitan.co.za//Beauty/Skin/sexy-body-strategies
BUFF AWAY
It's very important to shed dead skin that's accumulated during the summer, and then saturate your flesh with moisture.

1. Start with a quick once-over.
In the shower, slip on a dry pair of exfoliating gloves and use long, quick strokes all over the body. 'This gets rid of the top layer of dead skin, and will make it easier for ingredients to penetrate,' says spa director Kimani Roquemore.

2. Make your scrub multitask.
Use a body scrub that has a light oil base, such as almond or flaxseed oil, says Sonya Dakar, founder of Sonya Dakar Skin Care. This way, you'll simultaneously moisturise and exfoliate. Spend at least five minutes rubbing it all over your body.

3. Lotion up before drying.
After rinsing but before towelling off, 'Layer on a rich, thick, antioxidant-packed body lotion,' says Dakar. The lotion is heavier than the oil in the scrub, so it will seal the oil into your skin and make it feel supremely soft.

FOOT REVIEWER
After a summer's worth of trotting around in sandals, your feet are probably less than foxy. This soak will restore them.

'Submerge them in a large bowl of warm water with lemon and orange slices and a cup of Epsom salts for 10 minutes,' suggests Dakar. The salt and citric acid dissolve rough spots and clarify the skin. Then use a pumice stone on calluses. Lastly, slather on a lotion.

Celeb Look: Kim Kardashian http://www.cosmopolitan.co.za//Beauty/Skin/celeb-look-kim-kardashian
For Kim’s look, it’s important that you moisturise your face and then use a makeup primer before applying foundation; this will allow it to really sink in as well as hide any fine lines. Cover up any unwanted blemishes or dark circles under your eyes with additional concealer.

1. Apply a cream-based eye shadow with your finger to your entire lid. Powder shadows tend to create creases.

2. To only the inner corner of your eyes, apply a silver powder shadow.

3. Now, starting from the outer corner of your eye, use a kohl pencil to line your upper and lower lashes. Then go over your lower lash with a white pencil.

4. Use a light shadow along the brow bone for a more defined brow and an instant eye lift.

5. Apply at least three coats of mascara to accentuate the look.

6. For the final touch, apply a nude, matte lipstick to your lips and finish with a light, shimmer lip gloss. Use blush to accentuate your cheekbones and give your face a rosy glow.

GOOD TO USE:
M.A.C. Carbon Eye Shadow (R130), M.A.C. Blackground Paint Pot (R140) and M.A.C. Painterly Paint Pot (R140).

The Matte Effect http://www.cosmopolitan.co.za//Beauty/Skin/the-matte-effect
AM
When you wake up, wash off any dirt that may have settled on your face overnight, especially from your pillow. Maintain a thorough cleansing routine of toning and exfoliating. Use a mild cleanser, foaming (oil-free) face wash and an oil-free moisturiser. WE RECOMMEND Bobbi Brown Lathering Tube Soap (R245 for 125ml) and The Body Shop's Tea Tree Oil Mattifying Moisture Gel (R80 for 50ml).

'The face soap or liquid wash removes excess oils while toning will balance the skin's pH balance,' says Luciano Dos Santos, a make-up artist. 'Bearing this in mind, a good face wash will contain all the necessary ingredients to do the job on its own.'

Moisturising is important as it maintains the skins texture, but can cause problems. 'In this climate, high SPF moisturisers mean we have to live with looking a bit shiny from time to time,' says Dos Santos.

'Make sure that you don't use too much moisturiser as this will make your skin more oily,' says Mariscka Grobler, a skincare therapist from Emporio Valenti. 'Before applying any makeup, the moisturiser should have completely sunk in.'

Dos Santos says before you apply any makeup use an anti-shine serum. 'It delays the skins' natural oil from seeping through to the surface,' he explains. Apply a thin layer and let it settle for a few minutes before applying any foundation.

Ideally, you should use a liquid foundation that has a matte finish and pressed face powder. Or, you can use a powder foundation, in which case you won't need to use any pressed powder. Make sure that any concealer is in matte form as well. WE RECOMMEND Rimmel Stay Matte Pressed Powder (R54.95) and Stay Matte Foundation (R69.95).

Powder eye shadows and blushers should also be matte. 'Avoid any creams, light reflecting pigments or frosts,' says Dos Santos as these will only accentuate any oily spots. Water resistant and waterproof eye pencils, eyebrow pencils and mascaras are also good as they tend to last longer.

DAYTIME
Keep blotting powder or blotting paper handy because it's quick, easy and a great way to keep shine on the low. TRY M.A.C. Blot Film (R135).

'Working in a well ventilated area with a cool breeze or air conditioning will keep your skin looking dry and matte for a longer period of time,' says Dos Santos. 'Grease can also build up if you touch your face a lot as the sweat from your hands will be transferred onto your skin.' Keep hair from your face (particularly your forehead) on warm days as this will also help lessen shine.

PM
'In the evening, you should clean your skin properly, removing all makeup and dirt that has built up throughout the day,' says Grobler. 'Use a facial mask and exfoliate more often to eliminate further build-up on oily skin.'

Similar to your morning routine, make sure there is as little excess moisturiser on your face as possible. But having said this, don't go to the other extreme and not moisturise at all because your skin's texture will be compromised.

According to Dos Santos, the first step to balanced skin is to follow a healthy diet with no oily foodstuffs. 'Any healthy person's skin will create natural oils,' he says. 'Having excessively oily skin is where the products come in as these should be used only to control the oil.'

Celeb Look: Jo-Ann Strauss http://www.cosmopolitan.co.za//Beauty/Skin/celeb-look-jo-ann-strauss
1. For the same sun-kissed glow, apply a tinted moisturiser to the whole face and blend some concealer over any dark under-eye circles.

2. Accentuate your eyes with a black eye liner on the upper and lower lid.

3. To highlight the brow, apply a neutral eye shadow. Extend the line along your brow bone.

4. Use a soft shade of purple along the last line and just over the crease. Blend the shadow subtly where it meets the highlighter using your finger.

5. To emphasise the outer corner of your eye, use a darker eye shadow. Be sure to blend well and avoid a harsh line.

6. On the inner corner of your eye, dab some lighter eye shadow. Blend it towards the eye so that it gradually mixes with the darker shades.

7. Finish off the look with mascara and a natural shimmer lip gloss.

TIP:
To prevent eye shadow from creasing, pat a translucent powder on the lids before and after applying it.

GOOD TO USE:

Givenchy Eyeshadow Quartet (R495) Purple Emotion
M.A.C. Eyeshadow (R100) Shale
Dior 5 Colour Palette (R460) Sweet Illusion
YSL Eyeshadow Duo (R335) Golden Sand/Silver White

Beat Summer Skin Problems http://www.cosmopolitan.co.za//Beauty/Skin/beat-summer-skin-problems
Your breakouts are migrating toward your back and chest.
The best body pimple-obliterating method is to treat the affected areas with a scrub that contains salicylic acid or other acne-fighting ingredients such as lactic acid, says dermatologist Diane Berson. Try Eucerin Mild Daily Scrub (R83.99 for 150ml). After showering, use Dermologica's mediBac purifying wipes (R170 for a pack of 20 pre-moistened wipes). They are hygienic, quick cleansing wipes that will help purify your skin while removing excess oil, impurities and acne-causing bacteria.

You have ugly red bumps on your arms.
Almost 50% of women have 'chicken skin' (red bumps from skin cells that build up around hair follicles). Chlorine and heat exposure can make it worse, says dermatologist Audrey Kunin. The solution: a scrub that has a combination of glycolic, lactic and azelaic acids.

Ingrown hairs are the bane of your bikini line.
Excess oil production in the summer can plug up hair follicles and cause ingrown hairs. Use a salicylic acid scrub on the area to clear away the dead skin cells, says Dr. Kunin. Follow up with Dermafix's Calming Mint Gel (R200 for 200ml), which also helps with the inflammation.

You're perspiring in scary places.
You can use your antiperspirant to control sweating in unusual areas, like between your breasts and thighs, says Dr. Kunin. She recommends using an aerosol version, which is less sticky than a roll-on or solid and won't look chalky on your skin. Our pick: Nivea Fresh Deodorant Aerosol (R20.99 for 150ml).

Your lips are burnt.
Soothe your lips with a compress of milk and ice, says Dr. Berson. Follow up with an SPF lip balm that contains a hydrator like Shea butter. Try African Extracts Rooibos Nourishing Lip Balm (R22.95 for a pack of three).

Stubble is making your armpits look less than pretty.
For bump-free underarms, the key is to lift your arm so the skin is stretched tight, and then glide the razor from the bottom up. A three- or four-blade tool gives better results. Try Schick Quattro for Women (R59.99).

The Sweetest Thing http://www.cosmopolitan.co.za//Beauty/Skin/the-sweetest-thing
According to Forbes, Britney Spears has made $84 million off the sales of Curious and Fantasy for Elizabeth Arden. Forbes also reported Jennifer Lopez's 2002 debut fragrance Glow made cosmetics company Coty $85 million. Sales of her fragrances, including Glow and Live Luxe, came to $77 million in 2006. Over the years, the French perfume house has also signed celebrities such as Celine Dion and Sarah Jessica Parker, who helped the company meet its $4 billion target this year.

Some celebrities have launched the fragrance lines independent of cosmetic houses. The Beckhams are one such couple. In September the ambitious Victoria Beckham told the Sun newspaper that her and husband David's fragrance company is worth $190 million.

But there are so many celebrity-endorsed fragrances on cosmetic shelves at the moment, finding the one that suits you could be challenging. Here is COSMO's list of the latest celeb perfumes we love right now:

SIGNATURE DUO

The Beckhams launched their latest duo fragrance last month. Signature for Him is a deeply masculine fragrance that has a woody, oriental scent with hints of cypress and juniper berry, while Signature for Her is ultra-feminine and floriental with a mix of orchid, heliotrope and vanilla. Both fragrances are available at selected Edgars, Red Square, Foschini and Clicks stores in a 30ml (R285), 50ml (R375), 75ml (R460) eau de toilette and a 150ml body spray (R95).

LUSCIOUS PINK

From mid-November Mariah Carey's sophomore fragrance from Elizabeth Arden will be available in South Africa. Luscious Pink is a burst of sparkling citrus mixed with the soft essence of peony, dewy tiare petals, Lily of the Valley and sandalwood. It will be available at selected retailers in a 100ml eau de parfum spray (R455).

KATE
Supermodel Kate Moss debuted her self-titled fragrance in April this year with a floral-musk scent. Kate is spiced with pink peppercorns, orange blossoms, magnolia and vetiver. It is available at selected Edgars, Red Square, Foschini, Clicks, Dis-Chem stores as well as leading pharmacies in a 30ml (R295), 50ml (R395) and a 100ml (R495) eau de toilette and a 150ml (R95) deodorant spray.

SEXY DARLING
Australian pop princess Kylie Minogue is another Coty signee and in August launched the follow-up fragrance to 2006's Darling, 2007's Sweet Darling and this year's Showtime. Sexy Darling, an alluring, floral woody fragrance, is built around the exotic belle de nuit flower and red rose, enhanced by pear and sandalwood notes. It is available in 30ml (R275), 50ml (R365) and 75ml (R440) eau de toilette and a 150ml (R110) body lotion at selected Edgars, Red Square, Foschini, Clicks, Dis-Chem stores and pharmacies.

DESEO
Clearly not a novice when it comes to celebrity perfumes, Puerto Rican beauty Jennifer Lopez showcases her Hispanic heritage with her sixth fragrance. Deseo combines the scents of jasmine, pink geranium, orange blossom and French mimosa, and is available in 30ml, 50ml and 100 ml eau de parfum.

COVET

After a two year break from the fragrance market, Sex and the City actress Sarah Jessica Parker released her second fragrance Covet. It is classic and feminine with fresh green notes and hints of geranium leaves, Sicilian lemon, magnolia and amber. It is available in 50ml and 100ml eau de parfum spray and 200ml body lotion.

RUMOUR HAS IT...
Apparently Halle Berry is also teaming up with Coty to launch her own perfume. She told People magazine she wants to call it Berry and fans can look forward to a global launch in 2009. We've also heard whisperings of Victoria Beckham encouraging her friend Katie Holmes to launch a signature scent. Whether her megastar and scientologist husband Tom Cruise will have a say in the matter is yet to be seen. Other celebrities also rumoured to be releasing a fragrance in 2009 include Avril Lavigne, Carmen Elektra, Kim Kardashian and Nicole Richie.

The New Paparazzi are After You http://www.cosmopolitan.co.za//Beauty/Skin/the-new-paparazzi-are-after-you
Once, it was only celebrities who had to worry about being snapped unawares on the beach, and we'd feel a twinge of sympathy when we saw their tummy bulge, cellulite or bikini malfunctions emblazoned in magazines for everyone's amusement. But now, with so many of us addicted to Facebook and MySpace, we could all find out how it feels, as our 'pap' friends can snap us on their cell phones and post the results online for all to see.

To help you avoid this new danger, COSMO grilled a crack team of celeb insiders to find out how the stars dodge the pap trap.

CELEB TACTIC 1: LOOK THE PART
You're gorgeous – but it doesn't hurt to give nature a hand. 'It's not about having the perfect body; it's about making the most of what you have,' says US stylist Ceril Campbell, who has styled Cat Deeley and Dannii Minogue, and is the author of Discover The New You (Summersdale Publishers). 'Before you go, exfoliate, and make sure your skin's smooth and hair-free. Then slap on the fake tan – try an instant one or a tanning moisturiser that gradually builds colour. Apply it the day after waxing to prevent it sinking into open pores.'

Treat yourself to some pre-holiday pampering, too. 'Hands and feet are important,' says Campbell, 'So indulge in a manicure and pedicure before you go away. You should also make sure you have a haircut that looks good – wet or dry.'

Finally, make sure you're wearing the best bikini for your body shape. Get this spot-on and you can relax, knowing there'll be no shots of you spilling out of your top or your bottom. The November 2008 issue of COSMOPOLITAN showcases the latest swimsuit styles that suit different figures.

CELEB TACTIC 2: MAKE FRIENDS WITH THE PHOTOGRAPHER
Some celebs never seem to suffer from seaweed hair or sandy bums. But it's more likely they haven't been caught unawares by a pap lurking behind a beach umbrella. 'Deals with photographers happen a lot,' says Darryn Lyons, Australian founder of www.mrpaparazzi.com, a site where ordinary folk cash in on their pictures. 'Celebs need paps on their side, as we make them famous.

'Sometimes they realise we're watching and their demeanour changes, giving us some great shots. Other times they cut a deal with a pap where they or their favourite charities get some of the money made from a photo and we tell them what to do. They mess about in the sea, then maybe take their top off or change their bikini under a towel so we get a good set of pictures.'

Some celebs cooperate even more. 'We take a lot of stars on holiday, where pictures are planned,' Lyons reveals.

It's probably not realistic to offer your friends a week in Mauritius in exchange for a nice-photos-only rule. But bribe them with cocktails and make them promise not to snap you sleeping slack-jawed. Then you can convince your friends back home that you looked fabulous all the time.

But the most cunning damage control of all is blackmail. Get enough embarrassing photos of your friends and you'll ensure your own shameful pics end up in the Trash folder.

CELEB TACTIC 3: GET THE POSE RIGHT
You've made the most of your assets and forced your pals to swear on their COSMO collection not to snap you unawares. All that's left is to pose like a pro. 'There are lots of tricks you can use to look your best in front of the camera,' says UK beach-shoot veteran Alison Webster. 'Before leaving your holiday pad, check yourself in a full-length mirror to see how your stance can be improved. It's tempting to cross your arms to cover the lumps and bumps you don't like, but it just draws attention to them. The best thing to do with your hands is to put them on your hips – that way, you'll avoid the flabby look that even slim arms get when you press them against your sides,' she says.

'Everyone looks better if they stand tall with their shoulders back,' Webster says. 'Stand with your back to the sun, as it'll give a softer light and hide any lines or spots – plus, you won't squint.' Then, just before the picture is taken, put one leg in front of the other, to elongate your thigh, and point one shoulder towards the camera slightly – looking down this shoulder will get rid of a double chin. And make sure your hair has plenty of volume, because it'll make you look smaller.'

If you're still not confident that you look fabulous, cheat. 'Sit in the sand or on a chair with soft cushions and your legs will sink in, making them look slimmer,' says Campbell. 'If you're on holiday with friends, stand between and slightly behind two of them – they'll shave inches off your sides.'

But the most important rule of all, which celebs such as Cameron Diaz follow, is this: enjoy yourself. The shots that are worth the most to paparazzi, celebs and us ordinary types alike are those where everyone's having a brilliant time – and that just can't be faked.

Gorgeous, Glowy Skin http://www.cosmopolitan.co.za//Beauty/Skin/gorgeous-glowy-skin Reel in the benefits.
Studies show that the omega-3 fatty acids found in fresh catches like salmon can improve skin's moisture levels, making it more luminous.

Have some chocolate too.
The flavanol antioxidant in cocoa can create smoother, less scaly skin, according to researchers. Mix pure cocoa powder into your smoothie or top your salad with flavanol-rich fruits and veggies such as apples and green chillies.

Don't skip the multivitamin.
It won't work overnight, but a regular multivitamin delivers nutrients that keep your skin healthy and glowing in the long term, says Massachusetts dermatologist Ranella Hirsch.

Find your skin Zen.

Studies suggest that emotional stress can weaken your moisture barrier, making your appearance dull. Try a massage or yoga to de-stress.

Wash and glow.
There are thousands of products that promise to make you glow. Head straight for the face and body lotions with alpha hydroxy acids (AHAs), which slough away skin-dulling cells, says Dr. Hirsch.

Beware marathon showers.
They sap you of natural oils, warns Dr. Hirsch. Keep the water lukewarm, slather on a hydrating body wash to fend off dryness, and try not to soak for longer than 10 minutes.

Try a spritz trick.
If you need a bonus shot of radiance, spray on a thermal, mineral-rich mist (we like Vichy Thermal Spa Water), and top with moisturiser to seal it in. Minerals restore your PH balance, helping you glisten.

Splash safely.
Saltwater and chlorine leave a pasty film on your body that tarnishes your glow. After a swim, rub on a body-polishing cream.

Hit the gold mine.

Gradual self-tanning body and face moisturisers give you a natural, just-born-with-it beam – Neutrogena Summer Glow Daily Moisturiser is a good choice.

Spike your stash.
For an all over shimmer, US makeup artist Michelle Affronti mixes body lotion with a pinch of loose highlighting powder (try Jane Iredale 24 Karat Gold Oust Powder).

Pout Loud! http://www.cosmopolitan.co.za//Beauty/Skin/pout-loud
1. Dark lipstick tends to form streaks on chapped lips, so start by exfoliating them with a soft face cloth or baby toothbrush to smoothen them.
2. Apply a non-greasy lip balm to moisturise dry patches. After a few minutes wipe off any excess balm.
3. Use a lipliner to keep lipstick from looking messy. Choose a shade that matches your lipstick or is slightly darker. Using the side of the pencil, work from the centre to the corners. Blend with a finger so lips don’t look sharply lined.
4. Apply lipstick by rubbing a fingertip over colour and dab on. Smack lips together to spread it and blot with a tissue to remove any excess.
5. For a more precise application, use a lip brush to line and fill in lips. Press a tissue between lips to soften lines. For intense colour apply a second coat and blot again.

GOOD TO KNOW

* If you have fair skin, deep-pink lipsticks are most flattering, a medium complexion looks best with burgundy lipsticks, russet and raisin shades suit olive skin, and plum shades are flattering to dark skin.
* The more yellow your skin tone, the browner your lipstick should be.
* Mix your foundation with a touch of highlighting cream to keep your skin from looking too washed out against a strong lipstick shade.
* Keep eye shadows subtle so they don’t clash with your bold lip colour.
* Apply lots of lush black mascara to give eyes definition so they balance a vivid mouth.

Scrub Up http://www.cosmopolitan.co.za//Beauty/Skin/scrub-up
2. Following the instructions supplied, apply the microdermabrasion product with either a spatula or your fingers to your forehead, nose, chin, cheeks, neck and lip contour. Avoid contact with your eyes and lips.

3. Wet your fingers and massage for one minute in circular movements over your cheeks and neck and in up-and-down movements over your forehead, nose and chin.

4. Rinse well with warm water and pat your face dry with a soft, clean towel.

5. Use your fingertips to apply the calming moisturizer

GOOD TO KNOW

* Though not quite as effective as their salon counterparts, home microdermabrasion kits are much cheaper and more convenient.
* Avoid microdermabrasion completely if you're on any kind of acne treatment such as Roaccutane, mainly because your skin is very sensitive and it could lead to permanent scarring.
* Home microdermabrasion works well on hyperpigmentation and fine wrinkles but is best for treating clogged and enlarged pores.
* Most kits are best used in the evening twice a week for three consecutive weeks.
* Your skin may be a little red for about 24 hours after application. Give it a little TLC by drinking lots of water and applying a rich moisturiser for the week afterwards.
* Try to stay out of the sun for at least a week afterwards and apply an SPF30.
* While we think you should always avoid tanning beds, it's particularly important to do so for the week following your microdermabrasion.
* Stay out of chlorinated swimming pools.
* If you need to defuzz any area of your face, do the waxing before rather than after the microdermabrasion.

9 Get-Gorgeous Tips http://www.cosmopolitan.co.za//Beauty/Skin/9-get-gorgeous-tips Eyes

Fake awake eyes
To create the illusion of well-rested peepers, use a flesh-toned pencil to line the lower inner rims of your eyes. This area is usually bloodshot when you're tired, and the pencil will offset the redness so your eyes look bright.

Prep your lid
Before you apply any eye makeup, blend a creamy concealer onto your lids and into the inner corners of your eyes. This will give your shadow a base to stick to.

Go for contrasting lids and tips Pair a smoldering eye look with a crisp off-white nail polish. The combo looks elegant, plus you won't have to worry about your manicure matching your clothes.

Skin

Body shimmer Enhance your cleavage by dusting a shimmery body powder over the tops of your breasts. And to prevent the sparkles from rubbing off on your outfit (and your man's shirt), first apply a body lotion so the powder has something to cling to

Look pretty in pictures Avoid a shiny-looking complexion caused by a camera flash by applying a mattifying lotion to your T zone before you put on your makeup. It'll keep oil at bay all night.

Fake a gorgeous glow
Mix one part foundation with one part liquid illuminator, and then use your fingertips to massage it all over your face.

Hair

Pump up the volume For oomphy, tousled strands, try this trick from Nathaniel Hawkins, a celeb hairstylist who has worked with the Olsen twins: When you're finished blow-drying your hair, switch to the cool setting, flip your head over and aim the nozzle around randomly for a few minutes. "This creates pockets of air between your locks so they look extra full," he says.

Tune up tired hair
If you're without product and your hair looks frizzy, wet your hands, then smooth your palms over your strands. The water will reactivate any products you applied in the a.m.

Rework your hair flair
A glittery accessory adds instant glamour to any hairstyle.

Good Times, Girls! http://www.cosmopolitan.co.za//Beauty/Skin/good-times-girls 3 minutes TO FRESHEN UP YOUR FACE

When you don’t have time to do makeup from scratch, freshen up with a hydrating mist. GOOD TO TRY: La Mer The Mist.

Dim night-time lighting is fortunately forgiving, so there’s no need for foundation. Rather apply a small amount of tinted moisturiser to your face. GOOD TO TRY: Guinot Tinted Moisturizer, available in two shades – Natural, for light skin tones, and Golden, for dark skin tones.

Next, dab an illuminating concealer under your eyes and anywhere else that needs brightening (such as the sides of your nose and forehead). GOOD TO TRY: Yves Saint Laurent’s Radiant Touch.

Finish with a whisk of colour on your cheekbones and décolleté. GOOD TO TRY: Glowfusion in Luminous.

5 minutes TO FOCUS ON YOUR EYES

Universally flattering and quick to apply, a creamy bronze eye shadow is the perfect party quick-fix – you just dab it onto lids with a fingertip, no precision required. GOOD TO TRY: M.A.C Paint Pots in Groundwork and Indianwood.

Some liquid gel liners reflect light, which makes eyes appear to twinkle. Tilt your head back and half close your eyes to apply it. Gently glide the brush along your lash line, painting in several short strokes. To avoid smudges, keep your head tilted back for a minute to let the liner dry. GOOD TO TRY: Bobbi Brown Long-Wear Gel Eyeliner.

Finally, swipe on a lengthening mascara. GOOD TO TRY: Benefit Get Bent Wonder Lifting Mascara.

30 seconds TO SAY CHEESE FOR CHEEKS

You can apply a sheer cream blush with your eyes closed. Simply smile, dot colour on to each cheek and rub in small circles to blend for a natural rosy glow.

30 seconds TO GLOSS OVER LIPS

A sheer pink gloss looks fresh and is impossible to mess up (unlike lipstick). Dab it on the centre of your lips, then press them together or blend gloss with a finger. GOOD TO TRY: Lancôme Juicy Tubes in Peaches.

1 minute TO BEING BODYLICIOUS

Get limbs soft, glowing and smelling divine in next to no time by using a shimmer lotion laced with your favourite scent. Slather over arms, legs and feet. Alternatively, use an illuminising spray (GOOD TO TRY: The Body Shop White Musk Shimmer Mist) or a fragrant, gleamy body oil (GOOD TO TRY: Mary Cohr Precious Argan).

Getting It Off - Fast http://www.cosmopolitan.co.za//Beauty/Skin/getting-it-off-fast
* Instead of washing your face, use pre-moistened wipes to get rid of pore-clogging makeup, dirt and oils quickly.

* Hold a pad soaked in eye-makeup remover on each lid for five seconds – makeup will wipe off easily, without any tugging and rubbing.

* Dab some petroleum jelly on your mouth so lipstick will wipe off easily.

* Finally, smooth on just a little moisturiser.

THE MORNING AFTER

When you wake up after a late night of partying, drink at least two glasses of water to replenish lost fluids and pop a multivitamin to restore nutrients. If you’re not looking your loveliest, a little makeup can help – but only if you use it cleverly:

*The golden rule: less is more. If you pile makeup onto tired skin, it will sink into fine lines and emphasise them. Instead, apply foundation only to blotchy or darkened areas and dot a creamy light-reflecting concealer under the eyes, blending it up to the lash line.

*Sweep a bright pink blush over the apples of your cheeks to bring some colour back.

*Apply a highlighter to the tops of your cheeks and along your brow bones.

*Brighten the whites of your eyes by lining the inner rim of your lower lids with a white pencil.

*Curl lashes and apply two coats of mascara to ‘open up’ bleary eyes.

*Finish with a natural or pink lipstick or gloss.

Gorgeous, In a Hurry http://www.cosmopolitan.co.za//Beauty/Skin/gorgeous-in-a-hurry Makeup in Minutes

* Wake up and glow. Use self-tanner regularly so you won`t have to worry about bronzer and shimmer each morning.
* Pare down your face routine. Start with primer to lock in your makeup and prevent you from over-applying anything later. Then pick a foundation that you can adjust to your complexion and blends in fast. Dab concealer over zits.
* Use `pretty` powder. The fine particles in mineral-based makeup can actually protect and soothe your skin won`t clog pores. The nice, satiny effect, may be all you need for your low-key weekend look.
* Don`t go crazy with tons of colours. Instead, invest in one great neutral eye-shadow palette. Or pat on cream blush.
* Try the two-step smoky eye. Slapping on too much makeup can turn your delicate lids into a smeary mess. Just use an eyeliner you can smudge and thick mascara.
* Easy evening tricks! To ramp it up at night, count on three things: dark lipstick, a sexy streak of violet eyeliner and matte bronzer to warm your skin tone at dusk.

Fantastic Skin, Superfast

* Don`t strive for squeaky clean. Soaping up too often can strip away essential oils that keep your skin juicy. So only cleanse your face in the a.m. and p.m., and get a moisturising shower lotion.
* Kiss toner good-bye. It was developed to restore your skin`s pH balance (the level of acidity), but since most cleansers are now pH-balanced, ditch it.
* Love your calluses. They protect your feet, so don`t sand them away if they’re not painful or growing in size. Rub on an exfoliator.
* Streamline SPF. Instead of topping face cream with sunscreen, opt for a lotion containing SPF.
* Reach for a makeup-remover pad. If you just want to crash at night.
* Keep nails simple. Looking polished doesn`t require several layers of colour. A soft base coat is dazzling on its own.

Hassle-Free Hair

* Forget the phrase shampoo, rinse, and repeat. Simply lather up once. And only wash every other day to protect your hair and scalp from drying out.
* Leave some conditioner in there. Conditioners often contain many of the same ingredients as styling creams, so don`t rinse them out of your ends completely.
* Spot treat your roots. If that area is turning greasy and you`re short on time, simply dust on hair powder.
* Work your natural texture. If you have waves, just run an antifrizz cream through damp hair and you’re good to go. For fine locks, apply a root and blow-dry.
* Score style while you sleep. At night, braid or roll damp hair up into a low bun. When you wake up and undo your tresses, they will have dried into pretty waves.

Super-Eyes Me! http://www.cosmopolitan.co.za//Beauty/Skin/super-eyes-me Step by step
1. Minimise fine lines by dabbing a soy-, vitamin- or caffeine-enriched eye cream on the skin around the eyes, tapping it lightly until it’s properly absorbed.
2. Using a concealer brush, apply a yellow-toned concealer under the eyes, from the inner corners to just beyond the dark circles. Blend it up towards the lower lash line. If eyes are very puffy, gently rub a little chilled eye gel over the concealer.
3. Apply a little concealer to lids, too, if they’re looking tired. Set with a translucent powder.
4. To make eyes look brighter, rub a highlighter or a hot-pink shadow on the brow bone and at the inner corners. Lining the inner rims of the lids with a white pencil helps too.
5. Finish by sweeping on two coats of black, lash-curling mascara.

GOOD TO KNOW
• Makeup doesn’t stay put very well over a de-puffing eye gel, so it’s better to apply these gels after putting on concealer.
• Another way to reduce puffiness is to grate cold cucumber, wrap it in a paper towel and leave this on closed eyes for about 15 minutes.
• For a thinner, smoother layer of concealer, warm it in the palm of your hand before applying it.
• If you overdo the concealer, blend in more eye cream.

GOOD TO USE
• Clinique Moisture Eye Gel
• Garnier Nutritionist Regenerating Eye Cream
• Chanel Le Crayon Kôhl in White
• M.A.C Eye Shadow in Melton Mauve
• Estée Lauder Illusionist Intense Maximum Curling Mascara in Black
• Bobbi Brown Creamy Concealer Kit

Finger Tips http://www.cosmopolitan.co.za//Beauty/Skin/finger-tips Step by step
1.Clean any existing polish off nails and push back cuticles. Prepare clean nails for a fresh coat of polish by buffing with a buffing sponge.
2.File nails into neat squared-off ovals, and keep them shortish – long talons are dated.
3.Apply a base coat of clear or opaque polish. This will prevent the nails from being stained yellow by the high pigment content of red polishes.
4.Apply polish using short strokes, from cuticle to tip. Do the centre first, then either side.
5.Allow nails to dry completely before adding a second coat.
6.Finish off with a clear, chip-resistant top coat.

Good to know
• Pale skins look best with pinky reds that have blue undertones, olive skins look best with more orange-toned fruity reds and dark skins look best with deep, slightly brown reds.
• Just after you have painted your nails – before they are completely dry – drop a tiny splash of oil onto the cuticle area, using an eye dropper. This helps seal the cuticles and prevents the polish from bleeding into them.
• Red nails will most certainly draw attention to your hands – so take care to keep hands well moisturised.
• Dunking fingertips quickly into a bowl of iced water will help speed up the drying process and set polish. But don’t use heat – it will make the polish tacky.
• Fix up any mistakes using a tiny bit of cotton wool wrapped around an orange stick and dipped into nail-varnish remover. Gently rub over the area to remove unwanted varnish.

Good to use
• Revlon Nail Care Nail Enamel Remover with Vitamin E
• Revlon Nail Enamel Love that Red
• OPI Nail Envy Natural Nail Strengthener
• Clicks Beauty Essentials Buffer
• Revlon Colorstay Gold Standard Top Coat

Makeup Minefield http://www.cosmopolitan.co.za//Beauty/Skin/makeup-minefield Shaky foundations
Choosing the right shade of base is tricky – especially because our skin changes colour as the seasons change. Everyone should have one shade for winter and another for summer. This also gives you the option of mixing the two to create shades in between. (Mix them in your hands before applying, not on your face!)

Hide and shriek!
Concealer is great for covering up undereye shadows – unless you apply so much it only draws attention to them. If you’re wearing only a little makeup, apply concealer only to the inner corners of your eyes, to lighten them up a bit. If you’re wearing a full face of makeup, brush concealer on from the inner corners all the way out.

False smile
Trying to make your lips look bigger with liner never works. Not ever. Sooner or later, your lipstick will come off, leaving your mouth with a fake-looking outline. Rather use a pale lip gloss to make a mouth look plumper. And remember: natural-looking small lips are much more attractive than phoney-looking big ones.

Surprise!
You got carried away when you were plucking your eyebrows and now – oops! – you have a bare patch (and a permanently startled look). Choose a pencil or shadow (which you should apply with a brow brush) that’s a shade lighter than your brows for the most natural-looking fill-in.

Mean clean
If your skin feels really tight after you’ve washed it, stop using whatever it is you are using right now! It’s clearly too harsh – you should feel clean, not scoured.

Granny face
Too much face powder is ageing and applying it all over your face is too mask-like. Rather dust it on only where skin tends to get oily, such as the forehead, nose and chin. Nobody needs powder on their temples, cheeks or the undereye area. A bit of sheen is more natural.

Clumpy lashes
You can never wear too much mascara, but you can wear mascara that is too messy. To avoid clumpiness, apply it like a pro: use the wand as you would a round brush when you blow-dry hair – get it right down to the roots and then pull it through to the tips, lifting the lashes as if you were trying to curl them. Using a waterproof formula for the lower lashes prevents that grubby-looking late-night smudge.

Feet?
What feet? Out of sight, out of mind – our feet tend to get neglected in winter, and heels and soles can become dry and rough. For a quick DIY remedy, cut a lemon in half and rub it over these areas – the acidity will act as a natural exfoliant.

Fading colours
A few days before colouring your hair, give it a deep-conditioning treatment. Well-nourished hair locks in pigment better and more evenly than dry, porous strands and colour will look more vibrant.

Blotched up!
If you’ve botched a fake-tan application, don’t resign yourself to covering up for the next week. Gently exfoliate the area (don’t scrub until your skin goes red!) and then dot a matt liquid bronzer over the lighter areas to disguise streaks.

Smokin! http://www.cosmopolitan.co.za//Beauty/Skin/smokin 1. Begin by applying a sheer grey or silver cream shadow over the entire lid with your finger.
2. Apply a grey or silver powder shadow over this from the lash line to the crease.
3. Use a black kohl pencil to line the upper and lower lash lines. Add emphasis by going over the upper line in short diagonal strokes and strokes and then smudging it with a slanted eye brush.
4. Using a clean brush, sweep a dark-grey powder shadow along the lash line and below the lower lashes.
5. Finish with mascara.

GOOD TO KNOW

* Use darker, richer shades – such as charcoals and plums – at night rather than simply applying your daytime makeup more heavily.
* Alternatively, use shimmers and metallics to intensify a day look for the evening.
* For a modern, understated look, accentuate either the eyes or the lips; for a strikingly dramatic look, accentuate both.
* Smoky evening eyes look good with toffee, ruby or berry stains on the lips and a pale-pink or mauve blush on the cheeks.
* To make eye makeup last longer, start by sweeping a neutral, matt eye shadow or concealer over the lids as a primer. Applying shadow with a damp brush also helps to make it last.
* You need three different eye brushes to apply makeup with professional polish: one with a firm, round tip (to press shadow onto the lid); a soft, tapered one (to blend around the eye sockets); and a flat brush (for under the eyes).

Good To Glow http://www.cosmopolitan.co.za//Beauty/Skin/good-to-glow
2. Using a medium-sized blusher brush, dust shimmer powder over the tops of your cheekbones and along the jawline.

3. Use a fingertip to run the residual shimmer powder along the spine of your nose (especially if you want to make it look slimmer). Pat a little into the well of your Cupid's bow to create the illusion of plumpness.

4. Apply a lip gloss or lipstick that contains sparkle – the finer the particles, the subtler and more sophisticated the look.

5. Dab a metallic shimmer powder over your usual eye makeup on the lid over the bail of the eye, above the iris.

6. Dust shimmer powder or rub shimmering lotion onto your décolletage, focusing on your collarbones and cleavage.

GOOD TO KNOW

* The most important thing about applying shimmer is getting it on the right bits. It will highlight trouble spots so take extra care with concealing and neutralising these.
* Make sure you use the right amount: too much and you look like an oil slick.
* Shimmer is great for highlighting the planes of your face. Focus on the areas that are prominent. To check which these are, makeup artist Sylvie Hurford advises standing directly beneath a hanging light and checking in a mirror to see where the light naturally falls.
* Although it's not a strict rule, gold generally looks best on pale skins, while copper suits olive skin and silver works well with dark skin.
* Choose a nail varnish with a high-gloss shine, or use a high-gloss top coat over a pale-gold or pearl polish on short, neat nails.

(Sk)inspirations http://www.cosmopolitan.co.za//Beauty/Skin/skinspirations AGE: 18-25
YOUR SKIN’S CHARACTERISTICS:
Because your oil glands are working at full speed, your skin is supple and naturally well moisturised. Your cells regenerate regularly, giving your skin an even texture and a rosy, pretty glow. The downside is that excess oil production sometimes causes break-outs and can leave skin looking shiny.

YOUR BEST SKIN STRATEGY:

* Use a mild cleanser to remove make-up, oil and dirt without stripping skin.If you have greasy skin, use a foaming, oil-free face wash.
* Avoid pore-clogging heavy creams. Choose an oil-free moisturiser (with an SPF for the sun) that has antioxidants such as vitamin C or E.
* Keep blemishes at bay by exfoliating a couple of times a week with a gentle scrub.

AGE 26-30
YOUR SKIN’S CHARACTERISTICS:
Finally! Your skin’s oil production is under control. Except for the occasional zit, you should be in the clear, so to speak. The bad news is that your collagen production and cell renewal are slowing down, which means environmental pollutants are more damaging.

YOUR BEST SKIN STRATEGY:
* Switch to a cleanser with salicylic acid and gentle sloughers. It will prevent sporadic break-outs and get rid of the dead skin cells that cause dullness.
* Throw in a weekly deeper exfoliating treatment. Glycolic peel and microdermabrasion kits remove damaged surface skin, revealing a fresher layer underneath, and stimulate collagen production.
* Use an antioxidant-laced oil-free lotion with an SPF in the morning but at night use one containing retinol, which encourages cell renewal and teaches your skin to exfoliate more efficiently on its own. Use retinol at night – sunlight reduces its effectiveness.

AGE 31-35
YOUR SKIN’S CHARACTERISTICS:
Since you’re a smart cookie and have always avoided smoking and sunbathing (right?!), you should be looking pretty good. Still, your cheeks may appear just a little less plump, and you might have some fine lines, discolouration and dryness. There are plenty of products for dealing with this.

YOUR BEST SKIN STRATEGY:
* Make sure you apply a serum twice a day. Most brands can deliver more potent levels of age-fighting active ingredients (including antioxidants) than a regular lotion does.
* A new antioxidant in skincare is idebenone. Dermatologists report that it’s extremely powerful and has anti-ageing properties.
* Follow your morning serum application with an SPF lotion that will also treat pigmentation problems

Get Even http://www.cosmopolitan.co.za//Beauty/Skin/get-even
2. During the day, wear a sunscreen or moisturizer with an SPF of at least 15 to prevent further skin damage. Protect the face, cleavage and hands – the areas that are most often exposed to the sun.

3. Cover up in the meantime by applying your normal shade of foundation to the centre of the marks and dabbing it outwards with your fingertip until the borders are just covered. If you have fair skin, use a porcelain shade; if you have medium skin use a beige shade; and if you have dark skin, use a walnut shade.

4. If the blotches are still apparent, dab concealer on the area as well.

5. Blot with powder to set, and spritz with a little water to retain a dewy, fresh look.

GOOD TO KNOW

* Using sunscreen helps to prevent pigmentation patches as well as early signs of ageing and skin cancer.
* The most effective sunscreens have antioxidant properties.
* Pigmentation is most likely to occur on your chest and face – the skin in these areas is thinner and more sensitive.
* Pigmentation can result from sunscreen being applied unevenly. The contraceptive pill can also cause pigmentation marks.
* The alcohol present in many scents can cause pigmentation when skin that's been spritzed with it is exposed to the sun.
