Model Treatment

Models need to be camera-ready at any moment as they often get called out to shoots in exotic locations. But with all the lights, cameras and action, they have to take extra care as their hair can become dull and brittle.

We asked some of South Africa's leading beauties about their number one hair treatments.

JOELLE KAYEMBE The Treatment: ‘Every three to four weeks, I go to my hair god of a stylist for some highlights. He usually chooses warm gold and honey colours and some brighter blondes on top and keeps my natural colour underneath, so it shows through and gives my hair a more natural feel. He also changes it up depending on the season. In summer, he might warm it up with some darker golds, and in winter he might brighten it up with lighter blondes.’

The Style: ‘I think it’s important not to wash your hair every day, so your natural oils can work through. If I’m not working, it’s pretty much wash-and-go for me, or a quick upside down blow dry. But, if I am going out for a night on the town, I either ghd my hair straight or separate it into four pieces and wrap each piece around a curling tong for about 20 seconds. After running my fingers through it, I spritz on some hair spray and go. Don’t use too much though, as nobody likes the stiff look. This takes about 15 minutes at the most.’

Lyndall Recommends: I love how much body Pantene Full and Thick Shampoo (R34.99 per 400ml) and Pantene Full and Thick Conditioner (R32.99 per 200ml) give my hair. ‘Before I blow dry, I spray some Kair Extra-Strength Placenta Spray (R38.99 per 200ml) to keep my hair healthy and give it shine.’ For hairspray, she suggests L’Oreal Elnett Extra-Strength Hair Spray (R59.99 per 200ml).

A Word From Her Stylist: Lionel Kim, owner of an independent studio in Cape Town, gives Lyndall highlights using bleach and peroxide and when it comes to lowlights, he uses gold and beige in order to get a rich caramel colour. The secret behind Lyndall’s colour, he explains, ‘is the fact I divide her hair into very fine sections, instead of the normal six. No one wants the zebra-stripe effect.’
